Browser attempts to start a dial up connection

Jul 27, 2007 2:51AM PDT

I have been getting a window saying "connect svc camera", attempting to start a dial up connection. I have no svc camera, and am using a dsl connection.

I am using mozilla foxfire, and Windows XP Home.

The problem began shortly after we moved our office, and set up a new network, which is used primarily to share the internet connection.

Any suggestions?

Why do you think that it's the browser?

And when exactly does this message appear?

Do you have an IT guy? If so, what's his diagnosis?

Re: Why is it the browser

I only see the message when using the browser, typically (but not consistently) when I open a new page. Obviously, I can't say this for certain.

We are a small business; I'm the closest thing to an IT guy!

Rather strange.

What happens if you use IE?

Rather Strange

So far, I haven't seen the problem reappear while using IE.

I will mention that I have up to date anti-virus software (McAfee Total Protection for Small Business), and did do a full scan.

Then maybe it's a Firefox add-on?
Jul 27, 2007 5:24AM PDT

A good way to find out about that is to make a new Windows XP account, and run Firefox there. It starts without any add-on (they are user-dependent). Then find out by elimination.

If necessary, uninstall Firefox, delete whatever is left in the program folder (with me: Program Files\Mozilla Firefox) and your profile (with me: Application Data\Mozilla) and start all over.

Is there any folder resembling Program files\svc that could contain software?
Also see if there's anything like svc in your dial-up connections. It's safe to delete if you don't use dial-up. http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/os/windows_xp/connectivity/dialup//3513/ shows (at #13) where to find it. I'm rather sure there's a right-click delete option. If there's no 'connectoid' (as it's called) it won't pop-up either.

I trust you can do the necessary cleaning to eliminate this annoying issue. In the meantime: keep using IE. It really works. In fact, the majority of PC users do it. So you'll survive it for a few days.

Hope this helps and let us know.

svc camera

I found a svc camera under dial up connections, and deleted it. So now I'll see if the problem still exists.
