Resolved Question

Brother (Hl2170W) I can't print

Jun 13, 2012 3:02AM PDT

HELP!!! I have a weird problem on the setup below.
Mac Mini 4.1 w/OSX 10.6.8 and 4 GB Ram
Brother Laser Printer HL2170W w/firmware 1.09
Items above are on a network with a Win 7 OS system which I also want to share the Printer with - IF I can get it working.

My Mac sees the Printer and in fact from software on the Mac I can print a test page. I just cannot print a document. The process is like this. I run a Print routine on a Doc and I have to punch the RESUME button all the time. It states that it is connecting and printing and immediately goes back into a PAUSE mode. Getting the stats it states "Failed to connect to device"

On the Brother software utility BRA Admin I never see the Device Status in any mode other than SLEEP.

Nothing is jammed in the Printer and the IP address is set to what my Brother Software sees as the Pritner's IP address.

Does anyone have experience setting up such a printer on a Mac? I used the Brother disk for the driver and set it up as suggested.

Jesse

No I do not have this printer. BUT...

The fact you used the disk means the Brother driver and software could be very outdated. Why not check the Brother site for the latest?

It Works!!

Well, DUH, how dumb does one have to be to work around computers and have to have their hand held and be told to check out the manufacturers site?

I feel like an idiot and have kicked myself several times. I just had it in mind that the disk would take care of all my problems and didn't pay attention to anything else.

Thank you for the wake-up call! It is greatly appreciated.

I'll go try and see if I can help someone else in return for your good deed!

Thanks for the report back. You did great in your first post and supplied enough detail for me to take a guess. ANY DRIVER CD is 99% sure to be out of date because there is a long time from the time the CD is made till it gets to your hands.

I'm not writing this is the fix all the time but I've lost count how many times...

And a tip. Give it a day before you declare victory. I'm not superstitious but I swear I've fixed things and when I post it's fixed, then it breaks as if it knew!
