Broadband troubles with housemate's file sharing -- help!!

Sep 28, 2005 4:56AM PDT

Hi All,

First post here.

We're on RoadRunner thru TimeWarner, and we're splitting it to our two computers using a NetGear hub. The problem is with my housemate and her file sharing. The massive downloading and uploading by her is leaving me so little bandwidth that even normal web pages load slowly and internet gaming doesn't work well. These problems do not occur when I disconnect her from the hub. Obviously, talking to her and coming to an equitable solution has not worked.

What I'm wondering is if there's some way to limit her bandwidth so that I can get my "fair share", at least enough to do the things I'd like to do.

Thanks in Advance.

Dave

Only thing I can think of

but will cost you is a managed switch where, through it's console, you can allocate bandwidth.

One other cheap trick

I say this only in jest as sobotage is not nice and I am not sure how this would go. If you have access to your housemates PC when she's not around, you might see what adjusting the RWIN down to something like 8192 would do. It should slow the download speed considerably but I'm not sure if that would release bandwidth to you. It's also not fair.Wink

RWIN?

Wassat?

It's also not fair that she's running WinMX, BitTorrent, and probably other P2P stuff and squeezing my bandwidth.

For now, I've opted for a simpler solution....disconnecting her when she's not home.
