broadband router setup

Apr 19, 2007 10:13PM PDT

I replaced my desk top computer with a laptop and I want to set up the broadband router on the laptop because it is in the room where the cable and modem are located. The router software has to be installed on the closest computer to the router and modem right?. The question is will I be able to connect to the router with the laptop if I use it on the wireless mode and not directly plugged in?

What? I've set up hundreds of routers and none require that.

Where, who said this?

Doesn't the router software have to be installed somewhere? Could you help me out on this? There were 3 computers running off the router all hard wired but the computer that originally had the software is now gone and replaced by the laptop. Do I just install the software on the laptop and once that is done then will I be able to connect wirelessly? . It is a wireless router.

Which router's instructions are telling us this.

ALL routers I've setup (some hundreds now) have setup via a web page. The instruction sheet has ... instructions to use a web browsers to do the setup without any other software.

I can see why they ship such software but never has it been required. In fact I did try said software on a recent Netgear router. It failed to figure out a basic issue which I fixed in a jiffy by pointing a browser at the router and using the router's wizard.

Hope this helps,

Bob
