Question

Broadband not connecting.

Feb 8, 2014 11:32PM PST

I built this computer about a year ago, i3 processor, big hard drive ,and massive memory. It has been working very well with Windows 7 basic untill yesterday.

I loaded an image manipulating program from a very reputable firm and tried it with a couple of photos. After a while the screen froze and would not respond. I had to switch it off at the mains.

<div>Switched back on but now the web sites would not open .A message came on ,"unable to connect to the proxy server" check certain Lan settings etc.

I uninstalled the program in soft mode, used the Ccleaner to get rid of the residual bits, defragmented the drive and went to try again but no joy.

The message comes after I try Windows Network Diagnostics. "the remote device or resource won't accept the connection."

I have other devices working fine from the same router wireless. This PC is the only one ethernet connected.
I shall be grateful for help and suggestions.

- It' s unlikely hat it is related to that program you installed, but anyway please tell what program and where you downloaded it from (be detailed, some download links come with malware).
- Why that proxy server?
- That defragment surely was unnecessary
- If turning off and on again the router and the PC doesn't help, I'd try System Restore back to before that install.

All efforts failed.

I ended up using my "System Repair" disc to get the system where it was. The program I downloaded was Arcsoft's photo enhancement program. Although I am not certain if that was the real culprit. I have obviously written to them.
Thank you for your help.
