Broadband (DSL) not always on

Nov 30, 2008 3:33PM PST

I recently tried to set up a wireless network with my desktop and laptop and Dlink router. I worked over the phone with the tech support guys at DLink. No matter what they had me do I couldn't connect to the internet. they told me to return the router. But afterwards I realized that unlike most broadband connections, my DSL connection closes automatically when my computer shuts down, and when it starts up or reboots, i can't connect to the internet unless I first click on "connect to network" in Vista. If I just click on my browser without first clicking on connect as most people do, it says I'm offline and must connect. Could this be why I'm having trouble setting up the wireless network?

This happens when ...

I find a machine that someone installed the PPPoE software that you found prevalent in DSL install CDs.

Your post is too light on details but if said software is on the PC then your scenario does happen.

The way I set up the router is to have it do the PPPoE task. I didn't find any word you told the router to do that task.

Yes, the software is on the PC. It's a Vista system and the router is a DLink WBR 1310. This sounds like it might be the answer. How do I set up the router to do the PPoE task?

That is in the router manual.

Sorry but I'd refer you to the manual on that one.

you just have to connect to your routeur, dlink usually 192.168.0.1 admin no password manuel internet configure PPPOE your isp username and password, check always on option / idle timeout 30sec save, reboot routeur (power off/powwer on) then go in computer (windows) control panel internet options, connexions tabs, put the dot at never dial the connexions , ok, close, restart internet explorer, and that's it, if it's not working you should no that you d ont have to connect manually the connexion pppoe with your setup, and if the modem that you hgave is set in gateway mode, you have to factory reset that modem or consult your isp, Wink Mike
