Question

Broad band is 1.5mbps - possible to download a movie fully?

Jan 2, 2014 6:34AM PST

What I mean is, since it seems I can't stream a movie w/ internet speed of 1.5 mbps, is it possible with these streaming sites, like NetFlix, to dump or, perhaps, buffer the entire show/movie, then watch it? Or, are these sites strictly limited to real-time streaming? I'm not expecting to be able to download the whole thing, but thought it worth asking the question. We live in boonies - still using NetFlix snail mail. I'm just trying to see if there are any work-arounds that might help us overcome this slow internet speed. Our ISP has not shown any inclination to increase our service speed.
Any info is appreciated!
Thanks.

Answer
I just finished similar sized downloads w/1.5 Mbps - SLOW!

I support places that have 1.5 Mbps download speed, and just finished downloading approx. 2 GB at each. It took about 6.5 hours at each place. Not something I would recommend for anybody. A lot of folks who live in the boonies use satellite for Internet. Have you investigated that?

Yes, satellite, too expensive

Satellite is too expensive for our needs - we can stick with netflix snail mail. Lately, I've been tethering on my I'phone and just doing web searches doubles my monthly usage over contract, which is why I've gone back to Windstream. Windstream's service is the 1.5 mbps max. I've been pestering them for years to improve the service - we're just 10 miles outside of Lexington KY, but have had minimal impact.

Answer
If 1.5mbps is the service you subscribe to then...

I would say no. The reason being 1.5 is maximum and you will most likely not get that. If 1.5 is the actual speed then Netflix should be ok but probably not hi-def though. As for download, I don't believe you can download with netflix (streaming only).
