Brazil wants Google to pay Us$60mi or close

by cars4less201 / August 22, 2006 8:07 AM PDT

I've just read this on a Brazilian article. I couldn't find any info in English so I'm posting the link if someone wants to use Babel Fish or Google to translate.

According to the article the "Federal Public Prosecution Service" (don't know the real translation to it) ordered Google to shut down some Orkut communities that are used to transfer child porn material, to sell drugs, and others illegal activities.

If Google refuses to do it, they'll have to pay a R$200.000 daily fine (around Us$90.000). They also want Google to pay R$130 millions (around Us$60mi) in fines for causing collective pain and suffering, if Google doesn't pay it, it was required to shut down Google activities in the country.

Google says that they don't have archives of the related material in Brazil, and that the responsible for it it's Google Inc and not Google Brasil.

I don't want to live in a country without Google. Sad

As soon as I find something in English I'll post it here...

a world without google.

Based purely on search, I could live easily without Google. Dogpile is a good alternative.

But other services, especially Gmail - that I need and Hotmail, Yahoo etc.. don't provide solutions nearly as good.

Udayan.
