Brand compatable ink cartridges

Sep 28, 2004 11:36PM PDT

Has anyone had any success with those "brand compatable ink cartridges" out there? If so, which ones? I've always been under the impression that they've had a poor print quality. I don't do much photo printing (only occasionally), but if it's gonna give me a sloppy print-out, I don't want to waste my money.

Any thoughts??

Thanks,
~Aaron

My experience in refilling printer cartridges has been very positive.I've had Canon,HP,Lexmark printers and used refill kits with great success. The only problems I had were when the cartridge could not be used anymore because of ink drying out closing the jet holes. The price of printer cartridges was on the verge of insanity.I now use a HP Laser printer I got at a garage sale for $15.00 and it still works excellent.I also refill the toner cartridges saving zillions of bucks.Once you get the hang of refilling procedures it becomes a no sweat thing saving your money for other PC needs.

I have used compatable ink cartridges from 3Inkjets <http://123Inkjets.com> for several years with Epson printers (740, C60, C82, Stylus Photo R200). I've have very little trouble with them and the price is about 1/2 to 1/3 or the EOM cartridges. I get very good color with my Stylus Photo R200. That was a problem with the C82, but I think the problem was with the printer settings rather than the ink cartridge.

Ihave just started using orink cartridges in my epsom printer. I have not noticed any apppreciable difference in photo print quality & the cost is a saving of aprox 80% against originals. My only annoyance is 'every time I print I get a message telling me I'm not using a genuine cartridge, any ideas on how to switch this nuisance off.

I have had very good results with recycled cartridges for my HP 952C. I have had no results with trying to refill cartridges myself even though I did everything exactly as directed. I also have an HP 9670 which I have had no luck with recycled cartridges. The print quality is exceptional but very expensive. I wish I could learn to sucessfully refill.

Aaron,
Here are my thoughts based upon my experiences;
I currently own 2 different HP Photosmart Inkjet
Printers. Over the last year I have learned by
experience that not only are all cartridges NOT
created equally but that in my case only Brand will
do at least for color and phtographic printing.
I have tried off brand, refurbished and cloned
cartirdges that swear thay are 100% compatible,
Guess what, they are NOT. I tried 1 color cartridge
for my Photosmart 1 time and the colors came out all
Red.
I have also found that the paper does make a
difference as well especially if printing photos.
Black ink I have had limited sucess with but its not
quite as bad as the color or Photo inks.

I've had great results with the refills. I can't tell any difference in the quality. When you first do it it seems like a pain in the *** but after one time your a pro and it's not so overwhelming. I-MATEK - Distribution-online.com

I have used the Amazon ever last refill system for several years and it works quite well and is very easy to use. A vent hole- enlarged or drilled; cartridge goes into a holder, refill tank tubes inserted and ink flows into cartridge. easy easy.

I have used 'Carrot Ink' compatical cartriges for my Epson & Canon printers for over 4 years. Only one time did I have a problem and they replaced the cartridge at no charge and free shipping. At once service with help, talking to a live person. Can you beleive it in todays 'service yourself' market!

I have used ink refills for several years. I own a Canon printer that uses individual tanks to hold the ink. These tanks are easily refilled . I buy my ink at the Ink place.com. They sell compatible ink that works very well with my Canon and gives me good service. By doing this I buy some bulk ink and save an awful lot of money by not having to buy new cartridges. This company also sells compatible cartridges and a reasonable a price. When mine wear out and I need to buy a new cartridge, instead of buying a one at a higher price I've order the compatible cartridges and utilize them. The ink always comes with instructions on how to refill the cartridges for that particular printer. You could avoid getting ink on your fingers if you wear gloves and carefully rinse out the syringe When you finished.

Brand compatible ink cartridges
Jan 11, 2005 6:15AM PST

I bought some HP compatible printer cartridges a few years ago - much cheaper. But the problem I found was that the ink took much longer to dry when I printed a page, and if I was printing a quantity then it resulted in a lot of smudging. Been a bit wary ever since, especially as some compatibles are ridiculously cheap!

i have used 'brand compatible' cartridges for almost 2 years. i've found that the print quality is just as good, they're 1/3 of the price, and better for the environment.

Depends on the printer
Nov 27, 2004 2:49AM PST

Yeah, the printer, some are tricky, some are fine with anything. As far as I've seen, the cheaper cartridges will work, but after a few uses, say 5-10 cheap cartridges, the printer will start to screw up. The remedy to this problem in most printers is to pop in original cartridges, empty or full, print a page whether anything comes out or not, and then pop in the cheap cartridges. This method works well with HP printers. Canon, though, is a mystery. If you use cheap cartridges, most of the time they screw up the heads and you will have to replace the printer head, and in most cases, Canons are unrecoverable. But with printers and ink as cheap as they are these days, I say that you should stick with company cartridges. Furthermore, I say that you should buy a printer, preferably Canon, that has a cartridge for each color! Now that's SMART!

I can only speak from my experience. I have an Epson 740 printer (which is a color printer-not a photo printer). I have used non-epson cartridges because they cost 1/5 as much or less than "genuine Epson" cartridges. I get them from the internet. I printed hundreds of 4x6 and 8x10 prints. I showed them to a professional photographer who was amazed at how good they looked, They were were equal to or better than commercial photochemical prints. And I use Costco (Kirkland) "professional glossy inkjet photo paper". It costs about $18 per 125 sheets of 8 1/2 x11 paper that is 10 mils thick. I used Epson paper before and there is no difference but the cost.
The only thing is how long they will last. I keep mine under plastic in albums. I have a few framed exposed to indoor light and so far (one year) they are fine.

Out of about 2 dozen cartridges (both color and B&W I've had only one cartridge that was defective.

Aaron, I have had more than satisfactory dealings with Printpal.com They have an impressive amount of cartridges for new printers as well as older printers such as my old Epson 740i. I have seen other older printers listed as well, so I thoroughly suggest you try them. There's nothing to lose as far as the information goes and their prices are commendable as is their prompt delivery. Ruth OConnor

Aaron,

I have been using after market ink for years and I can tell you that there are good inks and there are bag inks. I've tried numerious places such as E-Bay, and a host of sites, but I always come back to a couple of vendors that have always had two things going for them. One, CompuBiz Inkjet, will always take the time to answer all my questions in an honest and friendly manner. This is important. And they have been around for at least six years, that I know of. Their products are dependable and very reasonable.

Two, AtlasCopy is also helpful, and it uses 'Repeat-O-Type' inks, which are first rate quality. Their inks are a little more expansive, but are second to none.

All my experience is with Epson Printers, and both the above vendors supply great products for me. I have just ordered a Canon iP-4000, as my latest Epson finally died out, and I expect to also use bulk inks with it as well.

I have never had problems with them whatsoever. But I have with others, and you have to be very careful and get excellent quality, or you can have problems all around.

So the old Roman term of "let the buyer beware" is true. But if you use the two I mention above, you cannot go wrong here.

You also can't go wrong with Elite Imaging Supplies. Their address is eliteimagingsupplies.com and they have great customer service and quality products. They will give you a one year warranty on your products, so if anything goes wrong you can return it and they will pay for the shipping. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with them, they sell on Ebay too and you can check out their rating there, they are 100% positive feedback. Also, there's free shipping going on right now and a HP sale. Check it out, you can't go wrong here~!

I have also found that different brands of compatible ink cartridges give different results. You have to experiment.

I would just remind everyone that the printer manufacturers rip us off with their OEM inks (like Gillette who sells the razor for practically nothing but rips us off with the blades for which there is no compatible source like with inks), and they warn us that it jeopardizes the warranty. HAH!! The warranty is good for one year. After that I would suggest that anyone who hesitated should now switch to compatible brands and find the one he/she finds best. The prices of OEM inks are a sham.

I purchased a discount cartridge from aink.com.
It never worked when I installed it. I contacted
aink.com for a replacement and they sent me a return Number. I had to pay for return shipping which wipped out my savings. Then after shipping the product back to aink.com, I waited and waited. I never saw my replacement ink cartridge. I have contacted them several times and they never respond to my emails.
So far I am out about 35 bucks for a black cartridge and you would be wise to avoid this company and shop at
Office Max instead. If you have a bad cartridge Office Max will hand you a new one, no problem. I'm staying with OEM cartridges.

Re: Brand compatable ink cartridges / tough, but don't
Nov 29, 2004 10:48AM PST

As an engineer (MS) in mycro (not micro) - technology I would straight away say "NO", but the problem is not only there.
The problem is that the suppliers of the so-called "Original Replacement Inks" are cheating twice.
First of all they do cheat with the ink itself. It is rarely the same as the Original Ink.
This can create problems with the Printing Head,
The ReplacementInk usually has a denser consistency then the Original, and therefore "can" clog the head. Surprisingly, actually not, for BLACK, because it contains a fair amount of CARBON, mostly Carbon Black.
Surpringly Carbon Black is a major ingredient in Tyres.

The other "Cheat" of the "Refillers" is that they inject the ink (not through the body of the tank) but through the "Outlet" which consists of a very fine velvet-like material.
Without doubt the needle destroys the evenness of the ink-outlet.

I have seen the differences, and to my shame I have to admit it was at my offic.

Of course everyone knows that HP, CANON, EPSON etc. are crooks. They would be bankrupt without their Inks.
But at present we have no choice.

Anyone in my circle can be sure that I will be the first to promote Replacement Inks, once I am sure they are really OK.

Best regards,
Harm

Just recently I purchased a color cartridge from our local wally world and thought I would save about $5.00 and had some presentation documents to print and It didn't seem to have the clearity of the brand name cartridge. It would be ok for general printing but I wouldn't use it for pictures or if you are looking for high quality doc's.

Happy Printing...

When I had my old HP printer, I opted to get refillables by sending in my empty cartridge and would get it refilled. Personally, I did not find it to be a problem. Many printer manufacturers states if you don't use their certified cartridge, the warranty is void. I would think that if you can buy a printer dirt cheap, does it really matter if you get the cartridge refilled? The price of newer manufactures cartridges cost lots, even more than some printers. When I bought my Epson CX3200, it wasn't cheap so I decided to use Epsons printer ink cartridge. Both black and color cartridges cost me almost $70.00, half the price of the printer itself. I have heard horror stories of using ink that you refill or some other cartridge services. Using someone elses cartride or filling your own is some concern of risk of damaging your printer.I rarely use color so I can use some discretion. I do mostly black and white, and then still watch how much I print. It doesn't take long to run out of ink. If you do a lot of printing, then of course a laser printer would be more practical. I certainly would not use other cartridges during my warranty period. There is a program called ink saver. It is downloadable and gives you 15 days free trial. It says that you can regulate the ink flow and get more usage from your cartridge. I believe that you save 50% on ink. I am not certain what the licensed version would cost but you can find out more on www.inksaver.com. Just a thought that you could investigate.

I recently purchased refills for my Epson 1280 from www.ims-inks.com. I came here to read what everyone was saying about using replacements and refills. So I waited before using them and went to the website and looked at the FAQ section. One of the questions was "Will your inks cause me printer's warranty to be voided?" The answer was no, the company cannot void a warranty unless they offer their ink free with the printer. That was interesting. The other question was "Will your inks cause damage to my printer?" The answer of course was no.

The only thing about using these inks in the 1280 is that a chip needs to be reset or else the printer will not recognize the refilled cartridge. The chip resetter has to be purchased from ins-inks and costs about 15.00 which includes shipping. All this information was included in the package. Sure enough, after I had refilled the cartridges, the printer did not acknowledge the refills. So I ordered the resetter and am now waiting for its delivery.

Being an HP printer fan I can only speak about these
machines. I've had no problems w/cartridges or with
refilling them. Refilling has saved me a bundle of money
over the expense of buying new cartridges all the time.
I bought the latest refill materials at Costco. I've never had a problem whith print quality. All my test photos come out clear and sharp. The transparencies I make for use at work come out beautiful. I also dont use
HP brand paper or transparencies. My HP printers keep going, and going, and going, and going, and . . . all with using refill and non-HP cartridges. This haa been my experienc. Some one else might have different experiences.

Problem with off brand
Dec 23, 2004 12:19PM PST

Son has a useless printer (now) thanks to an order for Epson ink that turned out to be a refill. All colors and black are now unusable. This was from a big retail outfit that delivered to his business. Unhappy camper.

My thought is that the store should pay for repairs and furnish him new Epson c82 brand ink he asked for. Any experience on this?

Happy holidays to all. And may your ink tanks be full for the new year!
