General discussion

brake and steering fluid

Apr 21, 2008 7:46PM PDT

I have a 2004 Hyundai Accent which I purchased brand new in 2004. Several times a year I check, among other things, the brake fluid level and the power steering fluid level. As of today (April 22) both the brake fluid level and the power steering fluid level is near the top of those two reservoirs. I don't understand it. The car is running all right. I don't drive the car hard and I only drive about 6,000/7,000 miles a year. But shouldn't I have used more fluid than that? Is there something wrong with the car or what? Thank you very much. user429

"If it isn't broke, don't fix it".

The fluid levels are were they're suppose to be, you're OK. The power steering fluid should never be leveled unless some is lost. The only way, you lose fluid is a cracked/broken line or bad O-ring. Thus, it needs repair. The brake fluid will start to drop abit as it replaces the distance the fluid travels to reach the pads, but that's very minor. Again, replace when low or dirty if the fluid drops below proper level. All in all typical retopping is all it takes over time and when brakes get fixed, its retopped to replace possible lost during repair and/or flush of system. The same for any fluid in the auto, just take proper maintenance and act as needed. -----Willy Happy
