just a sample

It'll take a few photos, but not that many. Every camera manufacturer puts in the smallest card they can and has the owner decide what size and speed of card they want.

Format-is pretty much wiping the card clean and sets the card up for the camera.

Format

A new card comes already formatted.

But

It is a universal format ....

It is not specific to your camera.

Failure to format the card with your camera can result in an unreadable card sometime in the future.
It is a ticking time bomb.

................

How many pictures left?

Most Canon cameras have that information in the lower right corner of the LCD. Your User Manual has a page that shows where information is positioned on the LCD.

thanks

The previous link did work like it should've

1. Press the <MENU> button, and then the arrow on the omni selector. The [ (Set up)] menu appears.

2. Select [Format] using the or arrow on the omni selector or Main Control Dial, then press the <FUNC./SET> button.

3. Select [OK] using the or arrow on the omni selector, then press the <FUNC./SET> button.

- To cancel instead of formatting, select [Cancel] and press the <FUNC./SET> button.
- To perform a low level format, use the button to select [Low Level Format] and the or button to add a check mark.
- You can stop formatting a card when [Low Level Format] is selected by pressing the <FUNC./SET> button. You can still use a card without problem when formatting is halted, but its data will be erased.

4. Press the <MENU> button.

- This operation is not available in mode.
- Low Level Form: We recommend you select [Low Level Format] when you think that the recording/reading speed of a memory card has dropped. A low level format may require 2 to 3 minutes with some memory cards.
