Bought DVI-D/HDMI cable, now need to hook up audio

New here to this forum, hopefully this question hasn't been asked recently. I've had a 32" Soyo LCD that I bought from Wal-Mart online for about two months now. I just had the HD upgrade settop box from Comcast installed recently. I've been running component to the TV, which has been working perfectly. However, the component picture is only running 480i. I know I could get a better picture. I recently ordered a DVI-D/HDMI cable that should be coming in soon. I have the DVI output on the cable box, along with a SPDIF optical and SPDIF RCA. I have a HDMI input on the TV. I have those two parts figured out. But, I do not have a optical input on the TV. Could I still run the DVI-HDMI cable with the SPDIF RCA to the TV to get sound?

Any help would be appreciated.

HDMI carries audio and video, DVI only carries video.
Yes you do need to have the digital audio feed to the TV. John

Thank you John, but could I run the DVI/HDMI cable with just the SPDIF RCA cable to the TV? Will that work if I cannot hook up the optical?

A couple of things

In reply to: Run seprate digital audio.

First, you should be able to run the RCA audio-out from your cable box to the TV. That's how I do it, but I run component, not the DVI-to-HDMI cable, but it should work the same regardless.

Second, you've got something configured wrong if you only get 480i using component. Component sends 480p, 720p and 1080i. Check your setups on the TV and your cable box, but it's probably your cable box that has a wrong setting.

ANOTHER IDEA DUMP COMCAST

And go with the Dish Network 211 system You will find that dish is much cheaper more hi-def programming and better picture quality. You can order the hi-def package and VOOM for only $15.00 extra per month and you have the option to install an outside antenna for your local hi-def stations or pay $5.00 extra for that service, I live in San Jose ca. and with a cheap outside antenn I pick uo 18 local digital stations 8 are in hi.def In closing Comcast wired my mobil park last year and for the fun of it I asked to try out there hi-def system for 3 days for free to see how it compaired to my dish system It had no optical output so I could not feed my amp 5.1. also picture quality looked nasty and much more money stewart
