Question

booting to safe mode

Nov 8, 2011 7:49PM PST

Pavillion p6310y with Windows 7 Home.
Is there a way to get to the recovery section of the above mentioned computer? I tried to get to the recovery from the boot up but it goes straight to the regular boot. It is infected with the W32/blaster worm

Thanks in advance

Under normal conditions

The Recovery section (return to factory fresh) key to press is listed at the bottom of the HP Invent splash screen. The key must be pressed to enter the Recovery section before the boot process continues past that screen. Depending on the model, the key may be F10 or F11, but check it for your model to make sure. If that does not work, then use the Recovery DVD set you were to make when the computer was new or order a set from HP, see here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4120042#N352
Be sure to change the BIOS so the CD/DVD drive is set for first device on bootup.

A possible alternative.

An alternative to lacsr's option if you want to attempt to clean this "Privacy Protection" malware, follow the guidance offered in the post below;
http://forums.cnet.com/7726-6132_102-5227899.html

Make sure you follow the instructions to the full.

I have locked your other thread as that is just a duplicate.

safe mode
Nov 9, 2011 8:57AM PST

Thanks for the help with this. I tried your link http://forums.cnet.com/7726-6132_102-5227899.html However I can not get the system to boot into safe mode. The F8 key as well as any of the other function keys just leads to the computer booting up normally.

I tried holding down the off button and rebooting that way. It did boot to the screeen that gives the option for safe mode. but I could not get the keyboard to respond to any commands. So after it timed out it booted up as normal. It seems every way I go i run into a dead end.

My brother in law isn't very computer savy and did not make a Boot CD, any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

Is this a USB keyboard?
Nov 9, 2011 8:23PM PST

If so the BIOS may not be accepting it and it is not recognised until Windows boots up. The BIOS may have an option to recognise USB keyboards but the easiest way is to try a standard PS/2 keyboard.

To boot up to the Safe Mode list of options the generally accepted way is to watch the POST (Power On, Self Test), messages on bootup, then just before Windows begins to load gently tap the F8 key once a second until the Safe Mode options display.

is this a usb keyboard

It is a usb keyboard, and there is not a port for a PS/2 keyboard.
