Bootcamp Vista?

Jan 31, 2007 12:42PM PST

I am new to the Apple clan, and have been thinking about getting XP to use with bootcamp. However, my macbook would run Vista, so I was wondering if there was any rumor of a vista version of bootcamp. If so, should I wait to get bootcamp?
Thanks!

Boot Camp

I think you will find that there is not a "special" version of Boot Camp specifically for Vista.

Seems a shame to ruin a perfectly good machine by putting Vista on it. Do you have a burning necessity to do this?

Just curious

I don't see how....

putting Vista on a Mac using BootCamp could "ruin" your "perfectly good machine". Maybe for this person, it isn't a perfect machine without Vista. Is there some reason why you think Vista could "ruin" a computer? Are you anti-Microsoft? "Vista is evil.... Just pure evil." Considering it's been out to consumers for only two days, I would think you should evaluate it first before putting out derogatory comments. Saying something is bad without trying it first is unethical...

Vista

following the same logic, how could the person think that putting Vista on a Mac would improve it?

After all, he has not seen it yet. You will note that I asked if he had some real reason for installing Vista. Some people have the need to run proprietary, work related, software.

I might also ask why you would think that I have no knowledge of Vista. It has been out and in use since November of last year. True it has only been released to the rest of the public for a couple of days, but that is quite besides the point.

I would also say to you, that chastising someone for saying something without actually knowing anything whatsoever about that person, or their qualifications for saying that something, is also unethical.

Putting Windows on a Mac does not improve the Mac, it merely expands it's capabilities.

I totally agree....

with your last statement. That was my point exactly. Now there's no need for further arguments. Happy

Almost right

My main question is "does anyone know if there is a 'Bootcamp for Vista' in the works?"If so, I should probably wait until it's out before putting windows on my mac. The reasons being, first, I want to run windows for several windows-only programs, and being an OS behind is never good. As software makers switch to Vista, I will be behind. Anyway, hope this helps clarify.
Thanks!

Bootcamp Vista
Feb 2, 2007 12:08AM PST

Bootcamp is just partitioning software?like PartitionMagic is for Windows. Apple will have to release the Drivers necessary for Vista. Bootcamp will do its job and partition the hard drive just fine. You?ll need the right drivers for Vista to be able to talk to the hardware.

Why put Vista on a Mac?..
My wife is running XP on her MBP because that?s what they use at her office. When they upgrade to Vista in the future, she will need that also.
I?m a gamer, want, need, DirectX 10. Only in Vista.
Everything else, only Mac will do.

Ok, well in that case, is there any rumors as to when Apple will release the vista drivers?

vista version
Feb 2, 2007 12:13PM PST

he you could you will have to buy Windows Vista Ultimate because microsft made the others not to work on virtual machines

Not sure about that one
Feb 2, 2007 10:18PM PST

I don't know whether MS has made it so that it CANNOT be used in a virtual machine.
OR
Whether it CAN work in a virtual machine but the terms of the EULA prohibit such.

I do know that the EULA specifically states that the Premium version can be used in a VM but the lower end versions specifically state that it CANNOT be used in a VM.

There is a difference between cannot be used and doesn't work in.

Vista and the Mac
Feb 3, 2007 12:50AM PST

In this case, though, you wouldn't be running Vista through a Virtual Machine right? Bootcamp (assuming this works for Vista) would actually be allowing you to install Vista natively.

Am I understanding this correctly?

You are quite right

it only bans the use of Vista on a Virtual Machine.
This obviously does not apply to Boot Camp which allows Windows to run natively.

To Clarify
Feb 15, 2007 10:37AM PST

It is possible to install Vista on a Boot Camp partition. It is even possible to install Vista on a Mac without Boot Camp and even possible to install Vista on a Mac without having Mac OS X Tiger on it at all.
If you install Vista on a Mac you should know that not all the drivers are compatiblw with Vista.
However, if you first install XP then install Boot Camp drivers in XP and only THEN upgrade (NOT clean install) from XP to Vista most of the drivers WILL work.

it will work with vista

you have to have the right drivers and the right version of boot camp

Bootcamp Vista - just do it!
Feb 27, 2007 1:42AM PST

I installed Vista on Bootcamp. Everything works fine, except for 2 things. First, the Mac Drivers CD doesn't work (but it doesn't spoil your Vista experience, everything in Vista works fine). Second, the default booting is now Vista, you have to press Option button to boot Mac OS. Can anyone tell me how to switch back this feature, ie: default boot is Mac OS, press Option for Windows?

Quick Fix
Mar 23, 2007 12:38AM PDT

Go into the Macintosh control panel and set the boot disk for the Mac partition. Once this is done you will boot as a Mac and if you want ot boot as PC then you can hold down the "Alt option" button to make the choice.
