Boot from CD

Sep 10, 2004 1:30AM PDT

Everyone seems to be missing the point that some PCs do not have BIOS that boot from CD, and the CD is supported via an installed driver which is no longer recognized as you are trying to install a new O/S!

In trying to take an IBM 560X with Win98 and an aftermarket CD and upgrade it to Win2k for my daughter, the W2k installation CD would start to read and then get to a point where it would no longer find the CD to continue reading. Using a W2k install floppy set was no help either, as eventually it would look for the W2K CD and not find it. I finally gave up and left it at Win98. Neither IBM nor Microsoft could provide a solution for me!

I ran into a similar problem, the install would read from the cd and all of a sudden it couldn't read any more.
I tried a different cd rom and it went fine.
It seemed the other cd rom was going bad.

Granted that not all computer can be booted with the cd. But not recognizing it during the install (something smell fishy here). Is the cd on usb or scsi connection? I am not all that fond of MS but I would put the blame on IBM..maybe.

Most of the newer machines will not have a problem with Booting from CD. Your IBM 560 should be able to boot a CD ROM - if the cd already has an autorun file. Keep in mind the speed that the disk was created at has a bearing on whether it will be read or not.

I frequently have trouble with reading disks that are burned at too high a speed for the current machine to read. Check that and see if that is your problem

When I see this, I grab a new CDRW and pop it in to see if the problem vanishes. CDROM drives start to show issues with behaviours like you write.
