Resolved Question

Bookmarks can't be deleted.0SX snow leopard Imac.Safari.

Dec 5, 2014 6:07AM PST

I want to reduce my bookmarks list.
But (safari) Bookmarks can't be deleted .
When I go to the list, and right click on the bookmark to be deleted, immediatly the selected site opens before I can use the delete key and delete like one normally would be able to...I think a recent problem.I have just tried a different (wired) mouse and keyboard-also changed batteries in the apple wireless mouse and keyboard-no luck.Imac is about 5 years old,OS X is 10.1 ,I think. Never had any other problems before.I am not super technical, but any advice appreciated.I have searched cInet and other computer forums/sites and can't find others with this problem-(mostly just people wanting to know how to delete bookmarks with systems working normally) .thanks.

I'll stick my neck out and suggest that you do the following
Dec 5, 2014 9:11AM PST

1. Launch Safari.
2. Go to the menu bar and select Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks.
3. On the resulting page, select the Bookmark that you want to delete
4. Hit the Delete Key.
5. The Bookmark is gone.

Before you say "I told you that did not work", I'll point out that you never, at any time, told anyone that you went to the "Edit Bookmarks" menu item.

thanks for trying mrmacfixit, but to no avail no edit option.

thanks, but (maybe because this is an older OS X??) ,when I open the bookmarks menu, there is no "edit bookmarks" option.
The b.m. menu menu only offers;

*"Hide all bookmarks" ( if selected then alternates to "show all bookmarks")
*add bookmarks
*add to reading list
*Bookmarks bar
none of these options lead anywhere useful.
btw
I should add to this information, my mouse (left& right click,&scroll etc)and delete key etc all function normally when making choices/deletions on safari and every other program on this computer.
The mystery remains.

At 5 years old, I doubt that the version of OS X is 10.1
Dec 5, 2014 12:22PM PST

This version was released, and given away for free, in September 2001, 13 years ago.

2003 would be the last year in which the iMac would be released running 10.1

Please post the output of the System Profile, found under "About this Mac/Computer" and the version of Safari, found under Safari name when it is running.

I have a few of the teardrop shape iMacs sitting on a shelf but I doubt any of them are running 10.1 but they will be running slightly later versions of OS X

Anyone know how to identify what version my OS X is?
Dec 5, 2014 2:32PM PST

time passes...might have been six years ago bought new,no more.I recall 20% discount, from big appliance store...was a shop demonstrator, and a new model coming, so maybe made 2007.I don't know for sure what version OS-X it is, the apple booklet came with it,just says Mac OS X snow Leopard.I was impressed at the time how Apple fitted a powerful computer into a fairly slim screen unit (tho it is 22")it has the futuristic slim alloy stand, "magic" mouse and wireless keyboard.
Is there an accurate way to identify what version OS X it has installed? And knowing that, would it help solve this mysterious fault?
thanks.

Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.0
Dec 6, 2014 5:56AM PST

All the information contained in your last post would have been much better off, and more helpful, had you put it in your first post.

You have a 22" iMac running OS X 10.6.x and possibly Safari 5.1

You need to install all the available software updates to this iMac using the Software Updater which you will find under the Apple in the top left corner of the screen.

Perhaps that will include a letter version of Safari.

sorry can't find anywhere a section giving "about this computer", ( give me some clues and I'll dig deeper) however, in safari have discovered
"VERSION 5.1.10 (65345.5910) copyright 2003-2013apple
please let me know if this helps advance our investigation.

Top left hand corner of the screen

under the Apple icon

About this Mac or About this computer

all the information is there. Post everything except the serial number, although that does not matter so much if it is as old as you say.

Answer
bookmarks can't be deleted.OS X safari
Dec 5, 2014 6:15AM PST

sorry forum watchers, this is not an answer, I just want to expand on my question and don't know if there is any other way.
I want to add, before anyone advises trying this- that if I go to the bookmarks list and try scrolling down to select a bookmark to delete (so it is highlighted) and then I use the delete key, the list then closes, but the highlighted website I want to delete will be still on the bookmark list when I reopen the list.
