Book suggestions - Networking

Sep 2, 2016 7:09AM PDT

Hello,

My background, or at least for the past 8 years, is in computer programming. Now I am in more of a networking/security role, so I know enough about networking to be dangerous but I want to really learn this field.

Can someone suggest some really good books on networking?

It's a big topic.

Not one book covers it all. For example you have your basic IP networks and then you have Cisco where you take classes on their products to learn their system. Cisco does have security features in their products so for this a book won't do. Look at Cisco training.

Yes there is plenty on the web but what you need to know changes with your client.

Thanks for the reply,

I know this is a tricky one to answer. I was hoping people would say something like "I loved so and so's book, it gave a great overview of networking and explained things clearly."

Not at all tricky to answer.

Since it depends on your needs and the client it would be bad advice for me to offer a book or web pages on IP networking when you need to learn about Cisco Security services on their gear. That's a common think I ran into and for that we get the CCNA courses lined up for the tech.

Since we don't know your client's needs yet, https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Books-Computer-Networking/zgbs/books/491302 and the top 10 there are probably your best in class.

https://www.google.com/search?q=lynda+ip+networking finds your basic IP networking tutorials.

Look into the 'networking for dummies' books.
