A boastful Barry Bonds said if he passes Babe Ruth that his place in history would be secure.
Asked if he would consider himself better than Ruth if he vaults ahead of the New York Yankees legend for second place on the all-time home run list, Bonds said: "I don't know yet, but the numbers speak for themselves."
The embattled Bonds moved within one home run of Ruth for the No 2 spot, but it was in a losing cause as San Francisco lost 9-5 to Philadelphia on Sunday.
Bonds blasted a home run in the sixth inning against the Phillies' pitcher Jon Lieber. The 450-foot monster shot, that ricocheted off the upper deck of the ballpark, was Bonds' fifth of the season and 713th in his checkered career.
Bonds belted a 2-1 pitch from Lieber off the facade of the upper deck in right field at Citizens Bank Park, cutting the Giants' deficit to 5-3. It was the third plate appearance for Bonds, who was walked intentionally in the first and singled in the fourth.
The 41-year-old Bonds, who has been dogged by steroid accusations, is 42 homers behind Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755.
However, Bonds has stated earlier that he doubts he will ever catch Aaron due to age and mounting injuries.
Sunday's contest was the finale of the Giants' five-game road trip. San Francisco begins a seven-game homestand Monday, when they make up a previously rained out game against the Houston Astros.
Bonds was peppered with insults from the Philadelphia fans during the weekend games.
Asked if it was hard to listen to the catcalls, Bonds said, "Dodgers Stadium is worse than here. This was nothing. LA beats them.
"It has been going on since 2003. You don't have a choice (but to hear it).
"They are supposed to be mature people but they have to look at themselves and their own children. A lot of them bring kids and say lot of things in front of their kids. If that's how you want your own children to be raised that's your problem."
i guess useing steroids is ok or is it?
