CNET's
Feb 25, 2006 5:29AM PST

There are several groups for BOL but until such a time as CNET has the reources (or the will) to provide areas where we can place photos and videos and other forms of media that take up storage and bandwidth, we need to use some of these sites.

In my opinion CNET isn't (yet) there with how to best serve their tech-community and even make a buck or two off of it. It's like this big, cool idea full of potential that's only beginning to realize what it is and what it could be.

Putting on corporate hat

Well there is Webshots

Taking off corporate hat

Totally agree

Tossing corporate hat on at a jaunty angle

But at least CNET *is* starting to realize it.

Webshots

I had never heard of it before you mentioned it. After checking out the site, do they make money strictly from advertising? I'm not sure why they provide software to download if it is just a collection of pictures.

Re: Webshots

It started a long time ago as a screensaver app, that would deliver different photos to your desktop. It has since grown into a community photo site, though it works more along the lines of an ofoto or snapfish than a Flickr. You organise your pictures into albums and share them with friends.

Alright, I posted something on there. Man, do they destroy the quality of what you post there. I painstakingly tried all of these options to maximize the look and minimize the file size and it was a waste of time. They just shove it through a meat grinder and crap it out in some horribly compressed streaming video. Bleh!

PS the video is just a proof of concept test a friend and I did. It's full of flaws and we learned a lot about what NOT to do next time Happy

Video quality is poor.

Should we try something else:

Google Video

or

http://www.vimeo.com/

I'm game for whatever everyone likes best. It just seems like YouTube has the momentum going right now.

Stick with YouTube
Feb 25, 2006 9:34AM PST

As Ross mentioned earlier, we already have so many BOL peripheral sites so we should probably just stick with YouTube. I clicked on the movie at the other site and it took forever to start loading so that is the price to pay for higher quality.

to make it clear
Feb 25, 2006 5:57PM PST

I?m not against BOL having off CNET.cm groups - its just I don't like all these groups.

I can put up with blogging and podcastings - that?s nice, but all this community sharing stuff I don't really like.

MSN Spaces is an example - it would be fine if it were just a blog, but its not its about photos and Microsoft trying to make some cash off your music library.

Then came along FLICKR (well its been around for a while, but I mean it became populart and more talked about a few months before Yahoo! bought it.

Is there really that huge a need for that kind of community sharing site? Maybe its popular now, but in five years time?

I don't have accounts for FLICKR or YOUTUBE and don't really want to (however, if CNET.com were to offer similar services using the single login method that Goggle (for example) use, then I would maybe use them more.

So to prove that FLICKR is not all bad, besides the BOL group, my favourite place there - http://tinyurl.com/ev469

I could not find anything on YOUTUBE - mainly as I don't like the site and did not look to hard so this is from Google video (its the same kinda site I guess) - http://tinyurl.com/k6c9h

What other sites do I not like? Um - (having a nice rant here ?cos I'm not feeling well and my laptop is VERY broken)...

...

..mind?s went blank!

Oh well - a site I love - www.nsa.gov/kids Silly - that brought about 45min of fun to me today!
