Always remember BOL hates Microsoft...

That explains a lot of things.

A Little Strong
Mar 6, 2008 10:54PM PST

BOL might view MS with a skeptical eye but I hadly thinks it qualifies as "hate." However it is a little troubling they glossed over the Google Toolbar issue.

As I recall Tom did say we should cut MS a little slack because it's a beta 1.

Hey....
Mar 7, 2008 7:55AM PST

Microsoft should be allowed to change their software and it should be up to other developers to update their software to be compatible with latest version, I mean... come on that's how software industry works.
There's no reason to say they're trying to deliberately disable google toolbar.

And Apple

Don't forget we hate Aple too.

And puppies.

Hate Apple?
Mar 7, 2008 3:55AM PST

With an Apple TV, MacBook, iPhone? I think not.

Yesterday's podcast was another example of downplaying MS. You gave a list of features brought by the iPhone SDK such as remote device wipe, global address lookup, device policies and push e-mail, as if they were not ALL part of Exchange Activesync. Any Window Mobile 5 or 6 phone has ALL of those features already, but the way you report it its as if Apple invented it.

Well...
Mar 7, 2008 7:59AM PST

An iPhone user won't particularly care if windows mobile has it or not. Wink

Most listeners dont have iPhones.
Mar 7, 2008 8:57AM PST

A non-iPhone user may find it useful to be informed that they can get these features a lot cheaper by buy buying a blackjack II, instead of an expensive, immature iPhone without GPS, 3G or a tactile keyboard.

Apple is clearly playing catch-up with the iPhone, but the way BOL reports it one would never know.

iPhone is a revolutionary phone interface
Mar 7, 2008 9:00AM PST

And you are merely looking at spec sheets?
It is everyone else that is playing catch up.

- Collapse -
Specs sheets are now useless?
Mar 7, 2008 11:00AM PST

The spec sheet tells me such useful things as I can have turn by turn navigation with voice prompts so I am never lost, or I can tether my laptop in the park at DSL speeds, or I can take videos with my phone.

You know, useless things like that that iPhone owners dont need until Steve gives it to them.

- Collapse -
Well...
Mar 7, 2008 11:25AM PST

It has google maps with a triangulation feature...
But yes, the tethering is a real gap in feature, still the point I was making is you're talking about small gaps in features, for a device that overall is years ahead.

- Collapse -
If I had to make a lost of features the iPhone is missing...
Mar 7, 2008 10:14PM PST

If I had to make a lost of features the iPhone is missing it would take up most of the page.

Small fature gaps indeed.

Molly hates Apple
Mar 7, 2008 9:18AM PST

Well, Molly has nothing but disdain for everything Apple. Apple is not perfect as a company, neither is Microsoft or any other company.

Do we have an MS fanboy??
Mar 9, 2008 3:25PM PDT

Do you not think that for the millions of people who have iPhones that this isn't major news?? Also activesync was a deal breaker for a lot of people so it being added is news for them.

Just because you obviously don't like apple doesn't mean that they should never be reported. Its also not like Molly hasn't had her fair share of criticism of the iPhone for not have exchange interoperability in the first place.

I can't even buy an iPhone yet, probably won't be able to till the 3G version comes out, yet I'm still interested. Who give a flying f**k.

Apple might be playing catch up on some regards but they are light years ahead with other aspects of iPhone and only behind RIM for smart phone market share. However the iPhone will integrate much better with an exchange server and no third party equipment will need to be added. This has much higher reliability then the system the RIM uses.

With MS track record with IE I don't think people being a little cautious is a bad thing. However they haven't just dismissed it completely, when they mad mistakes covering it they corrected it the next EP.

Do we have some-one who is not paying attention?
Mar 9, 2008 9:42PM PDT

In this case it is the way the news is reported (as if Apple invented GAL and Remote Wipe), but in general every little thing about the iPhone gets way over reported, and the other platforms get ignored.

Dont you think the tens of millions of Windows Mobile users would want to hear about the Sony Ericsson Experia with specs that smoke the old iPhone? Or about the MDA Compact IV thats also much better? Or that the Sprint Mongol is getting an upgrade to EVDO Rev A and GPS today? Or about the Asus Lamborghini branded smartphone?

You are blind for not seeing the selective news reporting thats going on here, and the 14 million WM phones that was sold in the same time that Apple sold 4 million iPhones says there are more people that care that you think.

Why the hatred
Mar 9, 2008 10:19PM PDT

Mate its a phone, just relax.

How many of those phones are on sale at the moment and how many of them have had an SDK released exclusively for them?

May I ask where you got your figures from because they seem a little off. According to Canalys the Worldwide smart mobile device market share Q4 2007 is Windows Mobile 12%, iPhone OS 7%. The iPhone was only launched in the middle of the year so how on earth could more windows mobile devices out sold the iPhone. Windows Mobile had a much larger install base so iPhones must have out sold Windows Mobile devices.

Anyway I'm not going to feed the troll any more.

Why the expletives?

14.3 million windows mobile phones shipped
http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/whats-an-iphone-14-3m-windows-mobile-phones-sold-in-the-past-s/

My point, which seems to have gone over your head, was that there is plenty of Windows Mobile news which goes unreported by BOL.

"I can't even buy an iPhone yet, probably won't be able to till the 3G version comes out, yet I'm still interested. Who give a flying f**k."

I think we know who the real troll here is. You have no iPhone, you have no WM phone, you dont care about the reporting of IE8. What are you even doing in this thread?

You mean...
Mar 7, 2008 5:00AM PST

You hate "Apples". As for Apple, the company, you come off as one of their major supporters. Just sayin...

Perception is reality. Although, to be fair, I did hear you on Real Deal say you used the MacBook to run Windows vs. OS X.

IE8 beta & Google Toolbar
Mar 7, 2008 8:14PM PST

IE 8 has a google search box next to the address bar, so until Google & Microsoft can get this unruly bug worked out.

I'm leaving Google's Toolbar uninstalled for now.

It seems as if Windows Live Search is the culprit that is causing Google's problem, but that's just me. You go to Microsoft.com and search for something...you are using Live Search...that's when IE8 & the Google toolbar start their conflict.

Windows Live Search looks as if it is incorporated into IE8 somehow, plus Google...so the battle is on!

Then you get the final copy and make slight changes to the review!
That's how you get a review out on launch date. Wink
