Bluray BP1600 samsung has trouble playing Warner bros. discs

Jul 17, 2010 11:36AM PDT

Two recent blu-ray discs that I rented (Book of Eli and Observe and Report) did not play on my Samsung BP1600. I even got a replacement of O&R, but it had the same problem. Basically, I put the disc in, the previews play, and then once it gets to the movie itself, I get no menu, I cannot get it to play by pressing play. All I see on the TV screen is a frozen image (that disc with a shadow of a disc).
Other Blu-ray discs (e.g., Sony, 20th c. fox) play without a glitch.

Any one have any tips on what to do/try? It is ridiculous to have to skip renting blu-ray discs from WB because of this problem.

Ditto for me with warner releases Sherlock Holmes and Book of Eli. Both play fine on my PS3. Samsung let's get a fix soon here please!

I posted the same here a few weeks ago... None of my Clint Eastwood (Warner Brothers) movies will play.

3 months and counting with BAD firmware.

disgraceful
Jul 20, 2010 12:12AM PDT

this is really disgraceful. I bought this Samsung Blu-Ray player because it came in a discounted bundle from Amazon with a bunch of movies and a rebate. And also to match my a Samsung LCD. But honestly I think next time I would go with a Sony. The PS3 has been rock solid as a player.

Same problem with Sherlock Holmes
Jul 20, 2010 10:42AM PDT

I've had two different discs from Netflix, the previews play great, but the disc hangs before the feature with the spinning disc. Quite annoying. I have the Samsung 3600, latest firmware.

Almost all WB Discs.
Jul 21, 2010 12:07AM PDT

Yeah, same problem. Samsung tech support in both chat and on the phone insist that the player needs to be sent in for service. $160 was quoted.

All of my discs play fine, except for Warner Bros discs. BUT, "The Informant!" does play. No other Warner Bros blu-ray disc will play, except for "The Informant!"..

And this really is a terrible blu-ray player. Question - on some of your regular dvds, if the player is set to 1080p, do you have trouble getting your dvd menus to show up on the screen? I have to set the player to 1080i to get dvd menus. Is this normal, or is this player just awful?

follow up on SH
Jul 21, 2010 3:09AM PDT

Strange. Sherlock Holmes worked for us. The mystery continues. I just wonder if we watched it before the last firmware update (I'm not sure when we ran the update), but we watched SH some time between 05/26/10-06/01/10.

For the record, we also got Shutter Island to work, which I have seen on other forums as problematic too. We had that between 06/07/10-06/14/10. SI is not a warner bros. movie though.

On possible solution (ahem, Samsung people) is to inform us when the latest firmware release was and tell us how to backdate. I saw someone on another forum ask for those instructions but s/he got no response.

Experiencing the same problem
Jul 24, 2010 10:50AM PDT

I have the exact same problem with my BDP3600. The following discs have stopped working since I've updated the firmware to 2.09.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (the main disc fails, the supplemental disc seems to work fine)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Complete Season 1 (all 3 discs)

- Collapse -
ditto
Jul 26, 2010 3:42PM PDT

maybe Samsung will be a little more efficient with testing these updates before they ruin their reputation...

my BDP3600 has the EXACT same problem with all WB Blurays I've been trying to play recently.

don't even get me started with the idiotic response tech support gave me, as they practically told me it's my fault the player isn't working since I did an automatic update when prompted to do so by the system...

class action anyone???

I figured out how to rollback the firmware...
Jul 29, 2010 9:34AM PDT

and get it to work. I was unable to play The Losers and Clash of the Titans (both WB discs) so I searched for ealier firmware using google (Samsung has taken everythign but 2.09 down). I was able to find 2.05 and put it on a pen drive, when i stuck it in my player it assumed the 2.05 was the newer software and upgraded to it. Now everything seems to play ok although I did notice some skipping. Use google to search for the file "BEv2.05_091015_BDP3600_XAA.ZIP", unzip to a pendrive and u/g your machines firmware. I have only tried this on a BD-P3600 so I have no idea if this will work on other Samsung players, YMMV.

I wish I could do just that.

Unfortunately, my Canadian player won't accept an American firmware update (I've tried). I've done a google search, but have come up empty. Does anyone know where I can download the proper files?

Tomwattzz,

That's an old post.

That'll take you all the way back to V.1.03. I don't recommend doing that, but I know BRC, and those files are legit.

BD-P3600 Warner Brothers Issue
Aug 1, 2010 12:19PM PDT

I?m having the same issue with my BD-P3600 Blu-ray player. It worked fine until the last firmware upgrade, since then I haven?t been able to get one Warner Brothers Blu-ray disc to play. They all show the previews, but when the spinning disc comes while loading the movie it freezes. From there I have to turn off the player before the drawer will open up and I can retrieve the disc. This is even with discs I have previously watched before the firmware update, everything else appears to play without issue.

I?ve been on Samsung?s live chat three times and on the phone once. They?ve had me remove the disc, turn off the unit, then hold down the fast forward button for five seconds to reset the unit to factory defaults. No help. Then unplug the unit for 60 seconds, plug it back in and do the fast forward reset again. I?ve updated the firmware by WiFi, CD and USB all at their request, then completing the fast forward reset, all to no avail. They suggested I needed to send the unit in for repair, even though it plays everything else fine, when I remind them of this and suggest it?s a firmware issue, they tell me to update the firmware. I can?t blame the Live Chat techs or the phone techs, all they have to go by is what is in their troubleshooting database, it?s the people writing and validating the firmware who are to blame, but we will never get a chance to speak to them.

Hopefully, they will make this a priority, in the mean time I guess I?ll have to hook up my older Panasonic player that plays them all without issues.

Same problem with BD-P1600
Aug 10, 2010 1:00AM PDT

I'm experiencing the same problem everyone else has reported. Tried to watch a new blu-ray version of "Book of Eli" last night and it would freeze when it got to the actual movie loading (with the spinning disk image). Had to power off in order to get any response from the player after that - as reported by others.

I'm amazed that this problem has been reported to Samsung a month ago and is still a problem. My opinion of this company's products has just gone down the drain. I was recently thinking that a Samsung cell phone might be in my future but not if they can't address a firmware problem like this. This is sad.

Samsung, fix your firmware problem!

Same problem different disc with BD-P3600
Aug 10, 2010 10:53AM PDT

I'm experiencing the same problem everyone else has reported, except I'm having the problem with Universal studio discs Tried to watch a version of The Incredible Hulk 2008, and Battlestar Galactica season 3, both new blu-ray transfers. It would freeze when it got to the movie or first episode after using the menu or BD live worked. Had to power off and quickly hit eject before the disc reloaded in order to get any response, as reported by others.

mwlogic stated earlier that they had considered a Samsung phone, of all the phones I've ever owned the Samsung was the worst! It's not that its truly a bad player its just the foolish frimware writers.

Need New Firmware
Aug 13, 2010 2:28AM PDT

There's a 89 page thread on the http://www.avsforum.com (AV Science forum) regarding the same exact issue. Certain movies don't play with the 2.09 firmware and many players can't be downgraded to the 2.07 firmware. I have tried to install the the 2.07 firmware, but continually get an error message when the USB flash is inserted. I guess the only thing to do is wait for another firmware update as it is futile to pack up the player and send it in for repair. I just wish Samsung would hurry up.

WHEN IS THIS GETTING FIXED???
Aug 17, 2010 2:08AM PDT

Any update on this??

I have the BD-P3600 as well and have rented Sherlock Holmes twice from Netflix and have had it stop on the spinning disc after the previews.

Come on Samsung... lets step it up. I have had NOTHING but problems with this Blu-Ray player (lesson learned). I have a Samsung TV and a Samsung monitor on my PC but I will NEVER buy any other Samsung product after my issues with this $400 piece of garbage and Samsung's complete lack of support for it.

no news yet
Aug 17, 2010 3:20AM PDT

I emailed again last week, and on Friday (8/13) they replied that they don't have a date for the next firmware release, but to keep checking their website. They also said a rollback in firmware was not possible, which I do not understand. I did alert them to the various forums about this issue, so hopefully they'll see that it deserves to get resolved quickly.

FINALLY FIXED
Aug 21, 2010 4:10AM PDT

All,

After two weeks I have the answer for you. This is the only way to get 2.08 working on your BD1600 and BD3600.

1. Go to samsung.com and download the USB firmware to your machine.
2. Unzip the firmware on your machine.
3. Burn the unzipped folder to a CD.
4. Place the CD in your bluray player and the update will take about 10 minutes. Don't turn off your machine or anything. It will ask you to install the new firmware and it works!

Stupid, but all my movies can now play!

Have a good day and happy viewing!

Finally fixed
Oct 4, 2010 4:26AM PDT

Wow. I have returned several movies to Netflix. I did not realize it was only Warner Bros. movies. I followed your directions mostly. I used a flash drive instead of burning a disc. It worked like a charm!!!!

THANK YOU!!!! Thank God for people way smarter than me.

2.12 fixed my player
Oct 6, 2010 5:41AM PDT

I have a BD-P1600 and purchased Iron Man 2 on its release day.

I put in my player and guess what, it didn't work.

I had to update the firmware from 2.09 to 2.12 with a burned CD because the player would not recognize there was a newer firmware and when I tried to update via USB it just gave me an error.

It took 8-10 minutes for it to ask me if I wanted to update via CD but Iron Man 2 played perfectly after that.

The newest firmware may fix your problems.
