Blue screen that scans on start up of laptop?

Jun 30, 2007 6:53AM PDT

I have an HP laptop running XP Home and yesterday for the first time when I turned it on a blue screen came on saying something like "checking consistency of disk" and some things run for a bit. I don't know if it ever cut off by itself I know I turned off the computer once.

On the restart I had time to notice if I wanted to cancel this operation hit any key within 3 seconds which I did.

Why is it doing this and is there anything I need to run?

I run AVG anti-spyware, Ashampoo firewall, and have scanned with CC and my spyware.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like Checkdisk...

CHKDSK (Checkdisk) is a part of Windows that scans for inconsistencies and corruptions of data as well as bad sectors on the hard drive, then attempts to fix any that are found. (Here is a picture of what's displayed.) It's normal if Windows detects a problem, and should be let run through completion. If it continues to happen repeatedly it may be a glitch, which can be caused if a program (such as your antivirus) tries to launch before chkdsk runs or if chkdsk itself becomes corrupt.

If that's not what you see or if the problem persists let us know.

Thanks for the excellent graphic! That is exactly what it looks like. I will let it run its course next time I boot up.

Thanks for the information.
