Blue Screen Nightmare.

Feb 17, 2006 1:14PM PST

I am running Windows ME and I keep getting a blue screen error. Here is what it says:

File Name: IOS(01) + 0000186E

Error: 0E: 0028: C003C17E

I have no idea what is causing this error. If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks for your help. I don't have Nero, but I do have Sonic MyDVD 4.0 and Cyberlink PowerDVD 5 installed on my computer. Perhaps fooling around with those programs may bring some positive results? If you can help me further, please do. As I said, I really appreciate the help of the folks on CNET because my knowledge of computers only goes so far. Many thanks!

Dust out the machine since heat can cause such errors too.

If you have DMA turned on...

for the drive it can cause the error. Try turning DMA for the writer off.

I have also seen complaints of similar errors AFTER ME users upgrade to Media Player 9--if that sounds like you, revert to an earlier version.

Other things to check are any application or hardware you added shortly before the errors started happening.

If you are running with an AMD chip (you didn't mention), you should also note that there have been quite a number of reports regarding faulty L1 cache (the cache on the chip). Go into your computers BIOS, and disable the Level 1 cache. If this resolves your problems, consider buying a new CPU.

Older AMD chips (K6-2) sometimes produced a similar error when overheated.

Last but not least, bad RAM can cause the fatal exceptions and this KB article (and its links) might be of benefit to you: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q138788/

Good clue about WMP.

My initial looksee found a reference to Nero. WMP 9 has a cd recording element/feature so that could be the same cause.
