Blue Ray player sound not in Dolby digital

Apr 10, 2010 11:42PM PDT

I've got a sony BDP-350 blue ray player hooked up to my Sony-XBR TV using an HDMI cable. When I watch a movie I only get the sound in Pro logic. My receiver is an Onkyo with Dolby digital. I didn't have this problem with my old DVD player that was hooked up without using an HDMI cable. It looks to me like I've got the Blue Ray player set up correct for Dolby digital output. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This was answered by others before but it has to do with copy protection and more. Let Onkyo explain it in more detail if my simple answer is not enough. There may be other hookups but let Onkyo tell you that.

Possible Fix
Dec 31, 2010 4:39AM PST

I had what I think is the same problem and spent more time than I'm willing to admit messing with a Sony BDP-S350 player and Pioneer receiver trying to get it to work. The player is connected via HDMI to the receiver and the receiver is then connected via HDMI to the TV.

It turned out that following the player's manual very closely turned on DTS-HD Master sound output through the HDMI connection to the receiver. This involved (per the manual, pg 20) setting "Audio Output Priority" to "HDMI", "Audio (HDMI)" to "Auto", and (in particular for me) "BD Audio Setting" to "Direct". I initially missed this last one because it is described as "Selects whether to mix or not mix interactive audio and secondary audio (commentary) when playing a BD that contains such audio." To me this doesn't imply that I will then receive Pro Logic sound, but that is the result of setting this to "Mix". However, I haven't yet checked if commentary still comes through or not when this is set to "Direct" (I'm guessing not).

Hope this helps.
