Straight from the Blu-ray to the TV. Then use whichever digital audio you have (fiber or coax) to connect either the player or the TV to the receiver.
I prefer this method because not every TV program requires my Denon Surround sound. Proper video and sound to the TV, then if the program requires surround, I turn on the receiver. Versatile.
I have a Pioneer VSX-817 surround sound receiver that is in perfectly good working condition and does not have many miles on it. I am upgrading to Blu-Ray and I am wondering about connections before I go buying cables I don't need. Is it possible to go from Blu-Ray to TV direct with HDMI and then go to the receiver with component and Toslink cables and still get my surround sound to work properly? My stereo manual says I should use the component and digital audio to connect both the DVD and TV to the receiver.
