blu-ray/hd-dvd in 720p

like many peepl when this format war starts to settle out im eager to by a bp or hd player but im concerned. everyone says that they look spectacular on a big screen with 1080p resolution and u get a lot less with 720p. i hav a 50 inch panasonic plasma with a native resolution of 1336 by 768. u think i shud play it at 720p or 1080i. with 720p i get all the details from that resolution but its been downcoverted from 1080 sothe image will look jagged and no where neer as sharp. with 1080i i get the full resolution of the discs but my tv can't display every detail of 1080i. or just get a 1080p tv. but getting 50 ich 1080p plasma is not cheap

just enjoy what you got. 720 is lot better than my 480p. I just bought myself a upconversion dvd player and it's not doing a thing for me, hehe.

1080i is good

I have a sony 32 inch sony XBR1 and watch my HD DVD player at 1080i. It looks excellent. I never lower the output to 720p. If your TV only displays 720p at best, then I would recommend outputting 720p. Just remember to have all the firmware updates installed on whatever player you decide on. I'm pretty sure that 1080p only makes a real difference for video games right now. If you want to play PS3 games and they are 1080p at 60 FPS then you would have to have a 1080p TV to display it properly. Now on the other hand, with movies - you don't really need it since as far as I understand, movies do not display at 60 FPS so there should be time for a 1080i TV to display all the appropriate lines before the next frame is sent to it.

Enjoy your panny plasma, the DVD format wars have just started, the players are still way to expensive.
I have a 47" CRT-RP that displayes in 720p and 1080i native.
If I switch between a NBC(1080i) and ABC(720p)it is very hard to tell the difference. Don't worry about it. John
