Blu Ray audio hookup question

Oct 20, 2008 12:50PM PDT

Probably already been thrown out there but I was wondering the correct setting on my Blu Ray player for audio considering this hookup: Blu Ray player to the tv via HDMI, and optical out from the tv to my receiver..I do not have a new receiver capable of HD audio. Should I set the Blu Ray audio to bitstream or PCM. Thanks guys

what bd player did you get? & does your reciever have 5.1 or 7.1 analogs (what is the model #)?

you maybe able to get DDtrue, DTS-HD & PCM 5.1 depending on those two above.

Blu Ray audio hookup question
Oct 20, 2008 11:27PM PDT

I'm shortly getting a Panny bd35 Blu Ray which doesn't have the analog outputs. My receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR304 which I'll eventually be upgrading, so for now I just want to make sure I'm setting everything up for Dolby Digital correctly. The other issue is if hooking into my TV first(Samsung PN50A550) am I going to lose any sound. With my old dvd player the TV was able to transfer DD to the receiver which I'm told many TV's won't do. Thanks for your help

you will be perfectly fine otherwise.

all of the TrueHD tracks are accompanied by a legacy DD track.

All of the DTS-MA tracks have a core bitstream that works fine with optical.

The best part is that these offer higher bitrates, even as the same darned track, on your bluray vs a dvd. IIRC, DD goes from 448 kbs on DVD to 640 on BD. DTS goes from 768 (or was it 786?) kbs to 1.5 mps, which is a near doubling of maximum variable bitrate.

just run optical from player to receiver.

dont run optical out from tv.

you can leave everything as bitstreamed in the player.

Thanks for your help and information. I'll be sure to go directly to the receiver from the Blu Ray. Thanks again
