Question

Blocking unwanted calls using Phone Tray

May 1, 2014 3:12AM PDT

My previous Dell computer had a 56k modem, necessary, and a phone jack, necessary, in order to use the free app Phone Tray. My new computer, Dell Inspiron model 3647, 3.00 ghz Intel Pentium G3220, doesn't appear to have either. Using Belarc Advisor I did not see any "modem", although I saw a lot of references to "Blue tooth", I think it has something to do with wireless phones? Anyway, I really like this app, I could set it to block unwanted calls. I'm sure I can find a "modem" to download to my new Windows 8.1. I think they make a "modem" gizmo that you can plug in the phone line in one end, and connect the other end to a usb line to my computer. I have a couple of usb inputs not currently being used.

So the question is, is there a better way to do this, block unwanted calls? Will Phone Tray even work on my 64bit computer. Is there better software. My current setup with Time Warner Cable, has the phone line going to one "physical" modem, which shows incoming calls on my TV, I like that. I also own my own "physical" modem that the "cable TV" is hooked too, (saves me monthly lease fee). The Phone Tray app also shows the incoming calls on my computer screen, if I happen to be on the computer at the time. And by leaving the computer on 24/7 it can do its job around the clock.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Eddie

Thanks for replying Kees, I'll look into that.

I was looking in my computer and saw a new folder, marked Dell. It turns out that maybe Dell downloaded a Bios update. I could just click to install it, but how do I know it isn't already installed. I don't want to mess up anything on this new computer it seems to be working great and really fast. When I checked their website there is an update with a version number. Is there a way for me to check what version is currently installed and or will it hurt anything if I just go ahead and click to install it.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Eddie
