Hey there,
I bought a HP dv7-1050ea last summer (July).
It was as expected very very fast and smooth to start off with. After a couple of months, I discovered many problems in regrads to speed and general running of the machine. Sometimes shutting down would take more than 15 mins O:
I contacted HP through their 'chat to a technician online' and was given a few hints on how to make my machine work faster.
Below are a few things I've learnt:
- vista is preprogrammed with a lot of 'junk' that seriously slows your computer down. The HP tech gave me a few tweaks that made is a lot faster.
- sometimes the software you install such as firewall and antivirus can really drain your system resources. && sometimes incompatability issues between software can also make the system crawl. For example, I use Zone Alarm Pro firewall and also used to to use Avast Antvirus because they were two products that personally I loved in terms of the level of protection they offered and their ease of use. However, I later discovered that my 'shut down problem' was due to the two being incompattible. So I changed my antivirus and now it takes no more than 30secs to shut down the machine.
- defragmenting the hard-drive helps to keep the drive in good shape and makes it easier to access stored files. I defrag my hard-drive once every two months.
- keep your drivers updated, and install any updates using windows update && the built-in HP update software.
- i would recommend CCleaner, it's free to download and use, and as the name suggest it clears all the 'crap' off your system. first time I ran it, it cleaned out 1.82gb of temporary files and other space-taking rubbish.
- lastly, run a registry cleaner as everytime you un-intall software, it leaves registry keys lying around the place which just slows your comp down. For this I use RegCure.
The few things above are simple but work like magic. I've had my HP Pavillion dv7 machine for nearly a year and it's working like a dream. Just take care of it, and it'll keep you happy
