Blinking CD Rom

Compaq 5000 which I bought used for grandson. Has Yamaha CRW2100EZ installed. Only worked intermittantly when I brought it home several days ago and now just sits there and blinks. Will not open or read. I have used system restored, uninstalled with device manager restarted, etc. but no help. Any advise other than a new cd-rw recorder? Thanks.

My 2100 was years old, and came back to life after I updated its firmware and put a cd lens cleaner on it. It's an old drive and if firmware/cleaner doesn't cure it then it may be time to move on.

Your post is void of detail about how it fails, so I can't offer much.

Thanks, Bob. Your advise is always dependable. And appreciated. Any suggestion as to a web site where I can get info on choosing the best new ROM?

The problem is that "best" is highly subjective. With dual layer DVD recorders well under 100 bucks and CDRW drives that will last more than a few years in the 20 to 30 buck range, I have to dismiss myself from a "best" discussion.

For me, if the interest is there for DVD as well as CDRW recording and the machine is up to the task, then the dual layer DVD recorder is a good value. If the machine can play DVDs, then maybe a DVD&CDRW combo drive. Or just get a CDRW and shop around.

If you want a brand name, the Plextor is always a great name, but I don't have them anymore since I go with the cheap units and replace them as they fail in a few years. Look at these for example cheap fixes.

If you get some OEM drive and no CD recording software, try this one from http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

While not a dual layer DVD recoder, I have one of these units at http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=DVRWDU-NB&cat=DVD

The recorders are in a very tight price range.

Back again. I followed your link to newegg and purchased the cdrw. No software or instructions came with it. Seemed like an easy installation to replace the old rom but the computer doesn't recognize it upon restart and neweg doesn't seem to offer any advise. Please help.

What jumper settings and what is on that cable?

In reply to: Re: Blinking CD Rom

Sorry to hear you got a bare drive. These are tough on those that don't do this all the time.

In short, you should duplicate the jumper setting from the old drive and the drive may show up in the BIOS.

Success... Everything is simple if you understand it. The problem was Master-Slave connection. Next time I will know. This was my first time inside a computer. Tomorrow I am installing a modem in another computer. Lots of fun.
Thanks so much for your help, Bob.
