blekko wiped my browsers after cnet download?!?!

by elektrasabertooth / May 13, 2012 8:46 PM PDT

Having been a Cnet member for a long time, I trust their downloads, however after recently downloading some file converters and codecs, I logged in the next day to find all my home pages on all my browsers (except chrome) wiped clean and instead there is this horrible looking blekko spam free web search in its place?!
I've managed to get rid of most of it but am still working on it, on all of my browsers and in my control panel to make it go away, it overwrote all of my home pages and all my previous tabs were destroyed in the process! Very unhappy with Cnet at the moment! I didn't once get an option to install this during my downloads. Sad

What exactly is this Blekko thing and why did it overwrite all of my stuff? And why is it so troublesome to get rid of?! I've seen lots of threads in google regarding this too so its not just me who was hit with it.

Not all downloads from CNET are from our own servers. Some come from other servers, and those are beyond control of CNET.
Can you tell exactly what you downloaded (at least the link to the CNET download page, what link or button you clicked to download and what program was downloaded from what site)?

List of Cnet downloads

In reply to: Re: downloading

I had downloaded the divX pack, and a converter for video files to which I have the link; if I had to guess which one gave me that unwanted crudware blekko I'd say it was the one to which I provided the link, as I trust divx, but I'm not that savvy so its just a guess!

There wasn't anything that gave me an option to install this blekko thing, and I've been researching it all morning and alot of people have also had a similar issue...the type of file that comes with the blekko was called vishcom anti-phishing - which in my opinion is more like malware as it wiped all my tabs and defaults without any permission.

Thank you for the response and for clearing that up.

I may have finally got rid of it from my system although it still shows up as a web search option.

To rule any possibility of CNET Download title of having this unwanted software attach to the title, I have sent this title to the CNET team for investigation and they'll be able to determine if the download comes with this unwanted software or not.

Again I apologize for this poor experience regardless of who's problem it is.
