Blank pages on Safari

Jun 27, 2009 12:44AM PDT

I am using Mac 10.4.11 and Safari 4. After adding updates to the computer and restarting, when I opened Safari, web pages were blank or had material only on the far right-hand side of the screen. In addition, the pages were far too wide and no scroll bar could be seen. Someone suggested that I delete "com.apple.safari.plist". When I searched for this, 3 items were listed, one from today, one from 3/09 and one from 2006. I did not see any option to delete. Any suggestions would be welcome. I am currently using firefox and having no problems there.

Let's try again,

Close Safari,
Double click the hard drive icon on the desktop.
In the sidebar, on the left, where you see Desktop, applications, documents, etc.
Click on the little house. The one with your name on it
In the next window, find the Library. It may be easier to find it if you are using List View. On the icons in the bar across the top of the window, there are 4 together. Left to right, four little squares, four horizontal lines, a window with three panes(kinda) and a black square with 2 lines on each end.
Click the 4 horizontal lines. (List View)
Find Library and click on the triangle shape to the left of it. This expands it
Find Preferences in the list. If it is not a list, repeat the previous step with the 4 lines
Click the triangle shape, make the view a list
Find com.apple.Safari.plist
Click on it ONCE.
Hold down the Control Key and click on it ONCE more.
In the resulting Menu, choose, Move to Trash. Click it.
It is now deleted. The Control key is the same as a right click on a two button mouse and as I don't know what computer you have, we went the long way. If you have an iMac, is probably came with a Mighty Mouse which looks like a one button mouse but is actually a 5 button, or more, mouse.

Launch Safari and see what happens.
Next step is to Reset Safari but this first one may work for you

Let me know how you go on. There are more things to try.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I tried it. It didn't work. I also tried resetting Safari. No go. I noticed that in the library list I had 2 relevant items: com.apple.Safari.plist with today's date. This is the one I trashed. There was also an item com.apple.safari.plist.saved which I did NOT trash. Should I have trashed both?

Safari,

no, probably not.

Does this happen on every site or just a particular few? Could you give me an example?

Go Here and download a new copy of Safari for your particular version of Mac OS X.

Go to the applications folder and drag the existing Safari into the Trash and then empty the trash.

Install the new version and see what happens then.

While you are out and about on the Internet, go Here and download a copy of Firefox.

If Safari continues to display the problem pages, Install Firefox and try that browser. The two browsers will exist quite happily together.

I am currently using firefox to enter this forum! Today, when using safari, all sites I looked at were blank except for material on the far right side of the screen. I did try downloading a new copy of Safari, but did not trash the old one, so I will try again. Thanks.

I tried downloading new safari (for Tiger...it wouldn't accept leopard). I trashed the old one. Long story short...same problem!

Just wanted to mention that I visited more sites on safari and noticed that many of the blogs I generally visit are well centered on the page, though the page is still too large for the screen and there is no visible scroll bar on the right. On the other hand, sites like CNN, NY Times and others are off the page entirely except for the far right hand side.
