blank desktop....

something messed up my pc.(song download?)
only background picture shows on desktop.
no icons or toolbar.
task manager will open,shows nothing running.
window pops up and states browser won't open,please re install.
how do i re install if i cant find anything?

You might be able to restore without reinstall.

Reboot the computer and press f8 before windows starts to load. That will launch a menu where you can restore to the last working setup.
(I use the method of tapping f8 untill the menu launches.)

thanks seaside, i will try that when i get home this evening.
i have no idea what caused this.

you should have tried safe mode first. This bypasses some drivers and the startup items. If you get your desktop, you can further diagnose. If not, you have serious problems that may need w98 reinstall

Hmmm,
are we talking XP?
If yes, then you've messed up something in the registry or in documents and settings in the all users section. So please some more detail!

What did you use to do the music download?

Kazaa (whatever the spelling) and some others will totally screw up your machine. That is probably what happened .

We need more information on what applications you might be using in general, for some of your web habits.

I meant to also suggest in my other reply, that you might have some type of driver conflict. Install anything new lately??
