Black screen virus

<Hi i have a sony viao operation on windows XP home. and when i start up the computer it starts up normal but when i should see my desktop, its just black and the curser is the only thing visable.. any ideas on what to do, or reformat it>??

Do you mean that after you click on your user account at the welcome screen you get a black screen, or when exactly does this happen?
