Black screen of/for death

I have just faced a serious black screen issue. IBM netvista all-in-one (2179) running ME seems to start up ok, but screen never comes to life. Instant flash of IBM blue logo, same for safe mode, ditto ME screen and blue screen. I cannot get safe mode to happen at all. Hold control for 45 seconds until all seems to be loaded still no screen. I have been fairly good about using free avg, spybot, ccleaner, zone alarm until two weeks ago when I bought the toshiba laptop that I am using for this comumication. Thanks in advance for any help.
