Black screen at boot

I have a mt3422 Gateway laptop and when booted it has a black screen, I have tried removing memory, hard drive, dvd drive, and cpu and rebooting with no change. I am thinking video card or mother board, doe anyone have any helpful hints for me. Thank you

Try connecting an external monitor and see if you get a screen. If none available, try booting normally and watch for hard drive activity such as would happen when Windows is loading. If this never happens, your laptop never completed POST. If it does, your laptop probably booted normally but your screen is unresponsive. When you first apply power there should be some sounds from the fan and hard drive as well as LED indications that the system started. You'll know what normally happens so giving that information helps narrow down the point that something failed.

Thanks, I have tried an external monitor and still no results. I could however hear the fan working and the optical drive works other then that I get nothing.

So no hard drive activity LED?

If so and you don't see evidence of POST at startup, odds are something on the motherboard has failed. It could be as simple as a broken electrical connection or worse....a damaged component. It becomes a matter of economics here. You can take it to a shop for evaluation. They'll charge a standard bench fee...probably $75 to $125 just to look at it. Repairs are hourly plus parts. The decision is yours. You can always get your data off of the hard drive using an external enclosure and another PC. Sorry but doesn't sound very promising.

Try...

Remove AC power, then battery, press and hold the power button for a full minute. Release, just the AC and try a power up.

If not, try a new RTC or BIOS BATTERY. (sorry but given the 20 names this battery has I will not guess what they call it in your laptop.)

Same issue

I also have a Gateway MT3422 and mine did the exact same thing. Power light comes on and i can hear the fan and optical drive spin but absolutely nothing on screen or an external manotor. I tried all the things in this thread with no success.
I am wondering how you made out or what if anything you ended up doing to resolve the issue. I don't want to think that I need to replace the mobo at $230 plus.

If you can get the mobo for 230 to 299

You did good. Most run closer or over 500 USD.

My entry here is no panacea. It's just a reset, just in case, so you know, hope, hope and hope. Nothing more.
