black screen

by justgreat1 / September 14, 2008 8:28 AM PDT

i have a dell laptop inspiron 8600c 15"4 screen, bought in 04/01/2005, with an ATI radeon turbo 9600 graphic card, centrino 1,7 processor, 1 gb ram.
suddenly the screen turned black i thought it went to standy mode, but it wasnt ... i restarted the pc to discover that it still black, but it's not really black because if i look closely with some light i can see that the pc work normally. i tried to connect it to normal screen, the pc worked normally.
i want to add that since few time, the color was becoming a bit red, but i thought it's not a big deal and i don't know if it's related to my last problem.
The only problem also i got 2 months ago, was that the laptop was going suddenly to standby mode, i cleaned it with spray and i launched the dell diagnostic tools, the problem was solved.

i looked in the net they say it could come from motherboard or inverter or a third thing called LCD backlight...can anyone tell me from what comes my problem ? or how can i know from which of these 3 reasons it's coming ?

thanks in advance for your help.

Top fix?

The part call the inverter. Here's a search for yours -> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=dell+laptop+inspiron+8600c+INVERTER&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

That's about a 40 buck part and given the CCFL life is some 25000 hours the most common failure is ... the inverter. If you are the DIY type that's what I'd replace.

" anyone tell me from what comes my problem ? or how can i know from which of these 3 reasons it's coming ?"

I'm guessing you want forensics on the failure. For that I'd have to take it into the lab, change each part on the bench, test and then tell you which of the inverter's part had failed. For this we get about 4 or 5 K bucks. Most are happy with just the replacement.

thanks a lot bob for your answer..
yes i am the type do it yourself lol ..
i understand what you said about take it to lab and try to replace each part to know where it comes from, but the problem is that i dont live in the usa, i live in france lol ... if i had the parts i would replace it and try it myself but i don't have any spare parts for laptops, i am a homeuser not a professionnal.
Thanks for the he link you gave me on google to look for inverters but it gives lots of results .. in case i want to buy an inverter to you have any supplier that you suggest ?

We get them from Dell. In France you can get it from Dell but from what I hear you may have to wait. See if there is an Ebay there too.

Scrounge such from another dell found with a broken LCD or such. Sorry but I can't tell you much other than what it's likely to be.
