Black lines Around Computer Screen Windows 8

I recently built a computer, installed windows 8 features on it and it was working properly for the first few days but now when I boot my computer up there is about a 1 inch black line making my screen not as full as it should be. Also, my computer is not allowing me to install my windows updates and keeps coming up with an error on why it wont install. I'm unsure of how to fix these issues. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. Thanks

Ask two questions.

1. Any updates required to run 8?
2. Which drivers do I need?

I'm running into folk that are new to PC building and 8 is throwing them for a loop as their motherboard needs a bios update. I can't guess this from your post but it's one of the new things you run into.
