Question

BitTorrent disconnects internet connection randomly

Mar 10, 2018 11:27PM PST

I moved to a new home some months ago and I found there is a major problem to the internet connection here: Every time I use BitTorrent, regardless of what I download, even a relatively small file (<50MB), I get random disconnections like once every 5-10 minutes for about 10 seconds then it gets back to normal. Any games that require internet, downloading that doesn't support resuming, streaming or screen sharing that I've done recently got too much interrupted.

For some special reasons, the landlord here provides us with internet service. They have a router (let's call it the main router) and I assume all apartment tenants have ethernet outlet connected to this main router. And I connect my own router to the outlet because the wifi signal provided by the landlord (main router) is not enough. Plus I have two PCs, and prefer both to have connections.

Things I know:
-The very same setup worked perfect fine before I moved, same landlord, and they claimed they have similar too (router/switch and such).
-It worked fine before I used BitTorrent. Random disconnections happened after BitTorrent.
-It can last for weeks. I'm not sure what fixes it, it could be on the main router.
-If it ever fixes, disconnections will never happen until I use BitTorrent again.
-If I use direct ethernet to my PC, there will not be any disconnections. Only if I connect through router I have random disconnections. (Both wired and wireless)
-If I use the main router (landlord's) wifi, it works fine. I don't use it only because the signal is weak.
-It may look like it's my router's problem so I bought a new one. But no. When it happens changing to the other router doesn't help.
-Both wired PCs or any wireless device share the above problems.

What do you think it is? Does it seem like the problem is on my landlord's router or my side? I'm totally confused here.

Answer
Very common problem.

The usual reason is you are torrenting some movie or app and there are companies that monitor such and then mount a DENIAL OF SERVICE attack on your connection.

There are long bittorrent discussions on this so I won't duplicate that here except to note nothing seems wrong about this. It's how it is out there.

Hmmm

So you're saying they're making a denial of service attack which fails my internet for only 10s once a while if I download a file that's not even close to pirating and it works only when I connect through router. And when I don't connect through router their attack somehow fails because I don't know, their attack requires my router? Interesting.

No I didn't.

I wrote that it's a common problem and in many other long discussions folk bat this about. Those long discussions get deep into why's and such. Here I kept it simple by sharing not much more than yup, it happens and a starter reason for you to do more research if you wish.
