There are indeed scams where a reseller will do this but NEVER let anyone remote in except your company IT (about the only exception I will accept.)
I worry this is not Bitdefender but a shady reseller.
-> I haven't seen a virus on an Apple Mac for over a decade. Why are you installing an antivirus? The most common reason is the owner used to be on Windows.
I tried to buy a copy of Bitdefender for mac two days ago. After doing the 30-day trial download, I could not make it run. I called their tech support. They said that they had to remotely access my computer to complete the install. I was reluctant to allow that so I tried to finish the install myself. Still could not do it. Called back and let them do the remote login. They immediately said that my computer was "highly infected" and that they needed to do an emergency cleaning of it for a one-time $99.95 charge. Said that it would be impossible to do the 30-day trial install without them doing this procedure. This really sounded like a scam so I (politely) hung up on them.
I installed Sophos and it did not find any infection. Just two adware files.
Two questions:
Anyone have similar experiences with Bitdefender?
Should I have been polite when I hung up or should I have been nasty since it was an obvious scam?
