Bit Comet, i'm lost.

Jul 23, 2004 3:18PM PDT

I jus kind of downloade it (since it was so popular) and had high CNET approval. I went to supranet.com and clicked on something called Flash part 1, the computer crawled along downloading but up loaded at a slightly faster rate. What I'm I doing ? I have no idea Cool

Thanks
Chris

well ten hours later 1.6 gig still remain to be downloaded. I guess no one wants to help with
programs downloaded from CNET, I'm beginning to wonder about this place.

These forums have nothing in common with what you can get from download.com

We're volunteers and don't deserve such a comment.

In direct response, why don't you take your issue to the author of the program?

well I certainly appreciate yours and other Mods volunteer efforts...Mr. Profitt...that is not in question.

what's in question are some of the "answers". Many of the answers (actually quite a few of yours), are what I would consider "non answers". Answers that dance around the question, without ever really addressing the question with a direct answer. If you don't know the answer , just say so, it's no sin NOT to have all the answers.

ALSO some of the answers I've seen you give are WRONG answers, and I'm sure you don't want to be giving out too many of them.

I have no beef with you, sir.

Now I've figured out the Bit Comet thing on my own. I can probably give you some answers there. Happy

AS For CNET's Secure Delivery. This is a CNET program
or shell for another program. Do You Know what it is ? and why it seems to want to control my internet connection ? yes or no will do just fine. Happy

I pay for CNET Advantage , partly to get these answers from "Tech Experts" in the Advantage forum. No answers and no experts in the forum for the past few days. Do you have an explanation for that. (again yes or no, either are a fine answer.......and you can send those old drives and burners you throw away to me. I'll make sure kids who can't afford computers or parts get them. Lots of real po' folk where I live. Wink

GIGO.
Jul 25, 2004 12:56AM PDT

Many of my answers are wrong for very simple reasons. I intentionally take the other lesser known roads and issues since by the time an user posts they already have the common answers. Unless they are in the Newbies Forum and then we start with "is it plugged in?"

If you want to tackle the incorrect answers, then look at what information most people post along with their plea. It's sometimes non-existent and you can take me to task that my initial replies are incorrect. Absolutely, I am guessing BIG TIME! But the method works quite often to unravel the issue, find more information and move to some solution.

There is another issue in which a person posts their CDROM doesn't work. The CORRECT answer is to get a new CDROM and test it to see if the unit failed. In the shop, this is what we do without fail since overall we deliver the most economical repair that way. Some may fault that and suggest we do HEROICS to save the drive but if the new drive works, we button it up, drop the technician charges to a fraction of the hour and put in the new drive on the bill. It's a matter of dollars and cents. If "tech" did all the gyrations and tests on the CDROM and it was dead after the hour of testing, then the owner would pay much more for each CDROM issue.

What do you think?

As to GIGO. You know GIGO and these forums are full of fine examples. How do you propose to fix GIGO? Should we not answer a question until the poster supplies all the needed information?

well I understand what you are saying with Garbage In Garbage Out, and yes, I know you are trying very hard to help folks. I agree many folks will just dog you to death with questions, that they need to answer themselves, by researching it.

You know maybe they should internet an Operator's License for computers and the internet like they do for cars. That would force them to learn certain basics that everyone MUST learn.

I guess the best thing to do would be to teach them basic tech "protocol", meaning record all information about the system first with pencil and paper, and ck out the manufacturers sites with that info first.

maybe a referral page of URLs and manufacturer help numbers, even just a topic post about correct procedure
with answer phones and URLs would be a good starting place for alot of folks.

I do know what your are saying about tech phobic people, who want you to do it all for them, even turn on their computer. Those folks I charge by the hour. Grin Wink

The DIME.
Jul 25, 2004 1:01AM PDT

The mods here recieve no dime for this. I did get a CNet coffee mug about 4 years ago which I reveal to you so you know that's about what some may get.

If you are paying for some premium content, then make your issues known there. In the help.com forums, such may fall on deaf ears (or blind eyes?)

I replied since I felt your comment needed it.

yeah I'll do that. I didn't realize help.com had forums. It's quite the multitiered technological-industrial complex, CNET networks. Happy

have a good weekend !

I think we understand now.

I read both of your replies and I like what I read. I hope you took all that I wrote in light of "volunteers" that you see here.

And if I truly give the wrong advice, the feedback lets me finetune MY PERSONAL KNOWLEDGEBASE. We did have someone spout that one wrong answer was cause to strip the little red m's. But they were acting as if this was some repair shop where you paid for service. They faded away very quickly.
