Yuck!

Bird flu may have decimated poultry businesses across Asia, but rat dealers have never had it so good....With customers shying away from chicken for fear of catching the deadly flu virus that has killed millions of birds and at least 20 people, she has been selling more than 400 pounds of rodent meat every morning....Spiders, water beetles, crickets, snakes, frogs and ants are all choice treats....

James, Are you trying to tell us something ...

that you men will be bringing home rat in future to win our love? (Sorry) Seriously though, how do we know that we havn't already tried it, considering some of the processing these days?

Our Queen has, it was the pride of place on the menu during her state visit to Belize (I think). She's also had the privilege of eating other delicacies, such as sheep's eyes etc. Royalty never had it so good, eh? I bet they've got the odd $123,000 BMW or two though.

About cat ...

I couldn't resist posting this. I suppose it's a bit offensive, and it's certainly based on a stereotype, but it's also a hoot:

Bill, you're right ...

It is "sort of" offensive IMO but jokes can only be made about things which are known to be wrong, i.e. nothing is funny when it is too close to the truth - and this one has been around for some 50 years and is in the same category as mother-in-law jokes etc.

Yes, funny - tee hee. OTOH I reckon the Chinese probably find it hysterical that people in the West poke fun at their food since it is one of the most healthy diets in the world. In the UK last week it was reported that heart disease has now taken over as a bigger killer than cancer for example.

I am sure that the Chinese can, with noblesse oblige, remain inscrutable knowing full well that the joke is on us!

It works both ways ...

Asians laugh at the eating habits and occasional squeamishness of us "butter eaters" as well.

I received that link in an email a few days ago, and I wasn't going to post it, but the setup in this thread was too perfect.

I can not refrain myself from telling my experiences..

All those delicacies you mention are common food in many different countries, and I've tried it all.. and they are good and healthy food.

I also heard that a university in USA, tried to introduce some of them, i.e. Worm, Cricket, Rat, etc..

Beside those delicacies food are also use in a TV show "Fear Factor" if I'm not mistaken...

Why common people are feeling sick of them? Its just because they have not try it yet, and lack of information on the subject.

Have a Nice meals... Happy

I agree in some ways, but it is more because ...
Feb 21, 2004 4:23PM PST

people are quite happy to eat what is "usual" - and what is "usual" depends where you live - and this is, of course, very different around the world.

Therefore, most people will not eat things if they are not considered usual, whether they might be healthy or not. This is true for all countries, wherever they are in the world.

You do not say whether you have eaten these because they are considered normal food in that region or because you were curious?

You're absolutely right...

I eat those food because in the line of what I'm doing, which is involving the Jungle, Mountain, Wild Life, Ocean and in many Remote area, I have to learn the nature to survive... So, of course I would be curious to know any other alternatives available..

I also know people who can cook those delicasies just like any other food in a fine dinner restaurant... I mean that if you cook it right you will get a good food... not like eating raw or live animal..

With all those diseases being mention... I think its good alternatives... at least until someone found a new diseases on them..

Have a nice week end guys ... (I would.. :b~ )

And you make very good points....
Feb 21, 2004 5:22PM PST

1) We had a TV programme in the UK where people had to wear a blindfold. They were given this food (cooked) and were then asked whether they liked it or not. Most said that they did like it a lot, but they were not happy when they were told what it was.

Therefore good food is good food (as long as it is usual!).

2) Because there are so many pesticides for plants and antibiotics for animals, they must be a more healthy food.

You say "in line of what I am doing". This sounds much more interesting than sitting in an office behind a desk all day. What do you do?

Hi McLazon,

I'm just an outdoor person, I like to go Mountain climbing or Hunting and sometime just being a local tourist, I found many different strange and weird places and cultures, that you might not know it exist. When I'm not on the road.. I sit in front of my PC and wandering around the internet.. looking for places to visit.

Cheers...

I like to talk with you. I hope you will come back here (there are a lot of websites on the Internet!) but I hope that this is one website where you will choose to post a message again soon.

My best wishes and "good luck" with the new places you visit.
