BIOS update help

Aug 2, 2010 4:21AM PDT

I run a dual-boot Ubuntu 10.04/Windows 7 machine, and when I updated my BIOS in Windows, Ubuntu stopped working. The CD also does not work. Is there anything I can do to recover the lost data? I was using it for a computer programming course, and all of my data is lost. I don't really care that much about the partition, as long as I can recover my data. Please help by Wednesday!

OS: Windows 7 (64-Bit)/ Ubuntu 10.04 (64-Bit)
Model: Toshiba Satellite A505-S6015

Try some USB bootable Ubuntu

The fact the CD does not work is a sign. Not a good one. At least your USB works so have a friend make an USB Ubuntu for you.

Confusing terminology
Aug 2, 2010 6:18AM PDT

In case there was any confusion, my CD drive works, it is just that when I attempt to boot from the Ubuntu CD, it does not seem to work. It shows a purple screen with a little keyboard and person for a few moments, and then switches to a black screen. The black screen doesn't do anything.

So there are other Linux CDs.

You may want to try the slightly older or newest UBUNTU bootable CD and then why not another distro. It's also possible you can use UBUNTU but with command line help to disable this or that but today I never bother. I just try another distro.

Why not the USB boot stick ?
