BIOS Question

Nov 19, 2004 6:12AM PST

Hi,

I have always been a little paranoid about messing with the BIOS on my computer, and I am not really sure how important it is to update this.

I downloaded the most recent version of the BIOS from Intel, but would like to know

1) What should I be concerned about in updating (i.e. how much do I have to fear fatal errors)

2) I am planning to add some memory. If I do update the BIOS should I install the new memory first and then update?

Thanks

For those that such things make them nervous, my advice is to store it for later IF you are not resolving a problem.

IOW... Don't fix what works.

Find out how many BIOS revisions you are behind. Search the MBs web site to find what has been added or fixed by the updates. You should also find a BIOS flash utility and some instructions how to use it. These generally run from the DOS prompt so you will possibly need a bootable diskette. The utility should allow you to make a backup of the previous BIOS first. This is not a bad idea. Follow the update instructions carefully. Do not allow power off during the time this is happening. It should take less than 1 minute. Restart the PC afterwards. When you put the memory in is not an issue. Personally, I would wait until afterward to even buy it if you are concerned about losing the MB. Good luck.
