BIOS Problems

Mar 1, 2004 2:34AM PST

I have this old P2 that I have pulled out to get running for the kids. Its An IBM aptivia 2139E5U. I didn't have the original processer that came with it so I got one from a friend. It wasn't the same MHZ and when I booted the system it says bios code is mismatched and equipment config error. I have tried reseting the CMOS and loading the defaults in the bios and still the same thing. I'm also having a hard time finding the bios driver or upgrade.

There are jumpers or dip switches on the motherboard that need to be reset manually for a board that old...only some newer boards will set this for you automatically.

Find the user manual for this board so you know how to set it if the board itself isn't marked with the info. You should be able to download the manual if you have the board model and rev numbers usually located in one of the corners along the edge of the board.

If you can't locate the numbers, see if there is an FCC number on the board. If that doesn't work, can you at least boot to the first bootscreen and see the ID numbers along the bottom of the screen...if you can boot that far, use the Pause button so you can write down all of the ID info and post here so we can help you locate the right board info.

I have found the jumper box, yet I have not found any info on the board except this. "Made In Taiwan R.O.C. V66XA 97168-1 48.35901.011" I did find the manual on this system but it is a bit vague. I printed some info from IBM on the jumper settings for this board. It's kinda greek to me though. the old processer was a p2 350mhz and the new one is a 233mhz. the jumper box has the numbers 1 thru 8 on it with the numbers 5 and 8 in the up or on position. there is the word "ON" at the top left end of the jumper box and the letters "SD" at the top on the other end. the new processer has these numbers on it 80522PX266512 SL265 and then directly under it is R7400105-216 Philippines. I understand that this processor is saying it is a 266mhz but when i looked in bios setup at sys info It shows it being a 233. I hope you guys can make some sense of this. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Since I reread your post, you should be able to get the manual for that board from the IBM Aptiva site...might well be the easiest route to take.

Goto http://www.ibm.com and check support button. Once there look at the IBM system case , probably on the backside for a decal offering model and system type. using these you can did search thoer support site for the info you need related for jumpers, etc. for any changes. Maybe you need a setup disk or just the basic specs, etc., IBM is real friendly in offering this, so go get it. Plus, make sure the CMOS battery os good, otherwise, replace it.

good luck -----Willy
