Question

BIOS Password isn't reset after trying to with jumper

Sep 12, 2015 7:58AM PDT

Product Name: Pavilion p6750de
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
I wanted to activate the hardware acceleration settings in my bios but forgot the password I set a longer time ago. So I read that it would be sufficient to move the password jumper, then wait a bit and then move it again into its initial position. Trying to access the bios I was asked to input a password and just typed something in. It worked and the bios interface was displayed. But I wasn't able to change anything it just said "View only item" all the time. The only things I could change were the time and the password. I tried to disable the password and rebooted but it asked again for a password and now neither my old nor a blank password would work.

After some research I decided to try reset the bios settings (cmos). I did the same procedure as with resetting the password but with the other jumper. But still it asks for a password and nothing seems to work.
Additionally, I am no longer able to boot my Windows 7 which breaks in the middle of the dot animation in the beginning. I read that this could be caused by some settings in the bios which I cannot change because I cannot access it.

I really appreciate any help on how to access the bios and how to get windows to work again.

Answer
reflash the BIOS

shorting the CMOS will not remove the supervisor password always, but a reflash will.

but after I first tried to delete the password with the password jumper it did work. But now it doesn't any more.

Will I keep my data?

Will I keep my data and OS when reflashing it? It should not affect the hard drive I think but I want to be sure.

(NT) flashing the BIOS doesn't affect the hard drive

just be sure it's BIOS password, not a harddrive password

No it is bios

It is the bios that is blocked certainly

Why is your data at risk?

If it is, remove the HDD until this is solved and copy/clone that drive data before it's lost.

If nothing works to reset that BIOS, I've changed motherboards to bring the machine back into operation. Cost is less than a hour of tech time (here that's 150 per hour!) so for us it's the cheap fix.
