Question

Bing - can't get it to go away!!!!

Apr 19, 2017 2:17AM PDT

Windows 10, Firefox 52.0.2 (32 bit)

I searched this site for a solution but nothing has been posted since 2010. Way too much has changed to make their remarks useful.

A couple of weeks ago, something happened to my laptop and I don't know how to fix it. I start my search using Google and as soon as it goes to the first page, it switches to Bing. I hate Bing, with a passion. Whoever designed their photo search is definitely the anti-Christ. I go to the list of possible search engines that I may want to use and Bing isn't on this list; I removed it as soon as I found this problem.

Even though I couldn't follow the instructions, I worked and worked and I finally found a place where Bing was listed and deleted "Bing" from the list of search engines.

I've scanned with AdwCleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware, and Microsoft Safety Scanner and Bing still takes over the searching action.

Bing is there and messing with my life. Did Bing put a virus on my PC? Who else would do this?

Any ideas short of blowing up my computer with a pound of C4?

Really need an updated and correct list of instructions to stop this madness. And has anybody at CNET checked with "Bing" to find out why they've made it nearly impossible to get rid of their product?

Thank you

Assuming your complaint is about the behaviour of Google/Bing in Firefox, try resetting Firefox to default and if that doesn't help rename the current Firefox profile, so it will make a new default one.

If you don't know how to do this, and you can't find it in Mozilla's help, please repost so we can tell you how to do it.

- Does System Restore back to before "a couple of weeks ago" help?
- Does it go wrong in all Windows accounts on your PC, or just in the one you use?

Personally, I only see Bing in Firefox if I go to that site myself. It's different in Edge and Internet Explorer, but since I hardly use those browsers, I didn't yet take the trouble to change their settings (if possible, I didn't even try). So it's not difficult at all to get rid of it, except for you. All you have to do is to find out why.

You go to www.google.com, type a search term, press enter and get a page from google. On the bottom of the page you press next and your next page is from Bing?

Or is that not what you mean with " I start my search using Google and as soon as it goes to the first page, it switches to Bing." Then can you explain what you do and what happens?

Did you try chrome or Firefox?

Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome will ask you, when you use them, whether or not you want them to be your default search engine. Bing probably asked you this as well. If you clicked that button, or even if you didn't, go into Bing's settings and click more. Once you get there, enter the search section. (Says SafeSearch and had little boxes you can check off). Click default settings. If this does not work, click off every box and close Bing. Try to search in a new engine. Hope this helps!

Wow, haven't been to BING in years

My sister complained recent updates to W10 had let Bing take over. She went back to W8.1 As for myself I left Microsoft years back when XP was about to expire for support. Maybe you should consider more freedom like a Linux distro.
