In retrospect, I should have known that Communism was doomed when in the mid-80s, the people of Dresden (then in East Germany), unable to receive West German TV due to the fact that their city was in a valley that made it impossible for those signals to be received, successfully demanded that repeater towers be built on the surrounding hills.
I'm also reminded of the old Breznev-era Soviet joke that had him picking up his mother at the Party-only airport, limoed into Moscow in the center lane of traffic reserved for Party VIPs', given a tour of her son's plush living suite with the latest Western appliances and then taken to his dacha in the Lenin Hills, which was even more opulent than his in town home.
After seeing all this, the joke goes, his mother looked at him and said, "It's all very wonderful, Leonid, but tell me: What if the Reds come back?"
