BHO's after new upgrades

Nov 9, 2008 10:09AM PST

Both AVG free 8.0 and Sun jre 1.6.100 have set BHO"s in HTJ log

Never had this happen before I upgraded to these apps.

What should I do with them????

AVG + BHO.....

Hi Ray,

For your "reading pleasure":

.....

Sun Java BHO:

JRE 6 Update 10 installs a new service that runs from boot called Java Quick Starter

You can disable the service if you want (which is what I did) or the more complete solution is to open the Java Control Panel, Advanced Tab and uncheck Java Quick Starter. This removes the service, the BHO and the FF extension.

Yep, I Disabled The Java Quickstarter As Well..
Nov 9, 2008 10:44AM PST

I noticed it was constantly trying to access the internet..

Unchecking the box involves opening Control Panel/Java icon/Advanced tab, then click on the + sign next to "Miscellaneous", then UNCHECK both boxes there, click on "apply", then OK..

Hope this helps.

Hi Grif

Thanks for the reply

I also noticed it was trying to access the internet

If they named them anything but BHO's in the HTJ log I would not of been as concerned

I had tried unchecking those items yet it still tries to access the internet. There has to be more to it.

Have You Also UNCHECKED "Update Automatically"?
Jan 2, 2009 8:46AM PST

After opening the Control Panel/Java icon, click on the "Update" tab.. UNCHECK the "Check For Updates Automatically", then choose "Never" when the little popup window asks "Are you sure?"

If you haven't unchecked that box, the Java program will still try to connect occasionally. Then again, if you want to it to automatically check for updates, then you'll need to allow it to connect to the internet. Your choice.

Hope this helps.

Have You Also UNCHECKED "Update Automatically"?

Yes, but I also uninstall update 10 and went back to update 6 to stay clear of "quickstarter". We'll see what happens now.

BHO's
Nov 9, 2008 11:10AM PST

Hi Marianna

I have read the treads by Mark...etc prior to this posting

When the Java ones showed up it caused a fright

I disabled per your instructions Java quick start.

The wiki on BHO's under the concerns page does not reassure an individual these are good items to have in your computer

Even though scans show them to be legimate and I have adequate protection
I would still prefer not seeing them in my computer

Thanks for the help and the available ear to listen to our concerns

Ray
