Better dialogue sound on a tight budget

Aug 9, 2005 10:37AM PDT

Hi.

I watch many movies on DVD at home, and it's sometimes difficult to hear soft dialogue (especially when there's other sound in the background of the movie).

I've done some reading on this forum, and it seems that the centre speakers deliver most of the dialogue.

Is it possible to buy just a centre speaker and not a receiver, and hook that up to my tv or dvd player? Is there anything I should know about if I want to place the speaker in the back of the room (closer to the couch) rather than with the tv?

If that's not possible, what would be the cheapest way to do this? Would I have to get a 3 speaker system with a receiver?

Thanks!

Your cheapest way would be to buy an inexpensive home theater in a box. I have heard some under 200 dollar ones that sound pretty good. You could then adjust the level of the speakers to suit your listening pleasure. Short of that, you could play with your tone or bass/treble controls on your TV to try to bring out the mid range a little better.

I seem to have the same problem. Does it have to do with Surround Sound? I turned that feature off on the TV and it seems to be a little better. Last night the crowd noise watching the baseball game was louder than the announcer.
